“Voting in the general presidential election is the last hopeless prayer gasped on the altar of American democracy.” This phrase, or something like it, was uttered by one of my graduate policy professors during one of our very first lectures together. While bleak, his point was that many of us in clear red or blue states are just waiting to see how the people in the great state of GAMINCAZWIPANV will control our fate come November. ? While (as of now) I’m not quite that jaded, I do agree that many of us focus too little on elections and policies enacted much closer to home. In fact, in the complex tapestry of American governance, much of which is now private; state and local policies often fly under the typical constituent’s radar. Yet, their impact on our daily lives is just as profound and, in many cases, more far-reaching. ? While many feel that this year, the general election may need not only prayers, but chanting, incense, and ceremonial dance to ensure the survival of the American experiment, it is always a good idea to spotlight the immense power wielded by states and localities in shaping our collective future. It should at least give you hope that all is not lost. Why? Because your fate may be more significantly impacted by actions that are NOT at the national level.

As we wait for the final count from the BC election, both the Conservative Party of BC and the BC NDP are claiming victory, but in politics, the only victory that matters is who forms government. The next few days will determine the true winner as we look to crucial ridings like Juan de Fuca-Malahat and Surrey City Centre, where razor-thin leads could still change the course of the election. Great perspective and basic. When an organization gets off-track, a significant emotional event can lead to self-correcting behavior. IF…responded too early with a shared purpose! Listen to the people in your organization. Pursue policies in the best interest of your stake holders. Stay within your means (available resources and realistic leverage)and all will self-correct.
