Our Foster Care Recruitment Specialist, Angela Smith, recently attended an inspiring dinner and presentation by Justin & Alexis Black, authors of the book Redefining Normal: How Two Foster Kids Beat the Odds and Discovered Healing, Happiness, and Love. It is essential that children, their families and foster carers are effectively communicated with when they use children’s social services. To support this, we worked with Tusla - Child and Family Agency to develop a toolkit on the ‘Fundamentals of good communication: How to have effective everyday conversations’. The toolkit will support Tusla - Child and Family Agency staff communicate effectively with people using children’s social services. It aims to help ensure that children, families and foster carers understand what is happening on a day-to-day basis, feel involved in decisions that affect their lives, and have a sense of control regarding their care and support. The golden question recruiters should be asking families is: "Would you recommend us to a friend?" This simple, yet telling question will reveal all you need to know about the way foster care families feel about your agency and service, and whether or not they'd recommend your agency and refer friends and family to you. Everyone involved in foster care recruitment already knows that recommendations from existing families are significant contributors to reaching and engaging new families. In our experience, that number is right at 30%.

We're aiming to raise awareness about children in foster care and the need for foster care reform that includes prioritizing maintaining a child's connections to extended family, community, and personal histories. Join us for a thoughtful way to do a lot of good by sharing what "Tastes Like Home" to you: 1. Post a pic of a recipe or food that “Tastes Like Home" to you. 2 . In the caption, share the story of the recipe and why it means so much to you. 3. Use the hashtags #TastesLikeHomeCampaign and #ConnectOurKids. 4. Include this text: Connect Our Kids’ Tastes Like Home campaign raises awareness for children in foster care who have experienced deep loss, including the loss of traditions—like beloved recipes—that shape identity and a sense of belonging. The goal is to improve outcomes for children in foster care, including those in Community-Based Care areas, while recognizing + compensating caregivers for delivering high-quality services.
