Having devoted my professional life to protecting emergency responders, preparing them for critical incidents, and advocating for the survivors of such tragedies, it frustrates me that school (including universities), adult foster care, and assisted living employees in many communities are prohibited and/or unwilling to provide medical aid to students or residents in need. Whether due to gaps in Good Samaritan statutes, corporate policy, and/or negotiated contractual language, this issue (unrealized by most witin our communities) needs to be exposed and addressed without further delay. Questions for those you entrust with the well-being of our youngest and oldest family members: 1. Does the facility's staff have training in cardiopulmonary resuscitation, use of an automated external defibrillator, first aid, and specifically hemorrhage control (Stop the Bleed)? 2. Do they have access to the equipment necessary to provide the above aid (including within classrooms, lecture halls, and residence halls)? 3. Is there any corporate policy or contractual language prohibiting employees (including resident advisors at universities) from helping a fellow human being in their greatest time of need? Please trust me when i say this is a BIG deal and I'm confident many of my brothers and sisters in public safety would agree. NOTE: Bill's have been introduced in the Michigan State Legislature to address gaps in the Good Samaritan statute but that only addresses a fraction of the overall problem.

It’s National Nurses Week… the best gift you can give your clinical staff is a safe place to work! 1?? Invest in a dedicated staff person to manage your WPV program. 2?? Engage front line staff in your WPV committee and ensure it’s not too “top heavy” 3?? Implement a program that is comprehensive and addresses everything from prevention to response to recovery. 4?? Create a physically and psychologically safe space for staff to report wpv incidents. I could go on and on… but you get the drift. What other key things are your programs doing that a making a difference in the battle against workplace violence?

Before we bring this campaign to a close, and start anew tomorrow, we wanted to remind you what brought us all together today. Currently, less than 1 in 10 people survive an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. By learning CPR and feeling confident to use a defib, you can give someone their best chance of survival. All citizens of the world can save a life. As you’ve seen today as we’ve travelled around the globe, it doesn’t matter what country or time zone you’re in and it doesn’t matter if you’re keeping time to “Stayin’ Alive” or “Baby Shark”. Confident chest compressions and use of an AED can – and do – save lives. Whilst we globally all come together under one banner, one eight-pointed white cross, the heart of St John lies in local communities – St John’s shared mission to be a global leader in first aid and medical responses to community healthcare needs starts with neighbours; it starts in village halls and community centres; it starts in streets, schools, and youth clubs. At the very core of our work are the 160,000+ St John volunteers who give their time, effort and expertise to help others. Our volunteers come from the local communities they are working in and improve the lives of their own family, friends and neighbours through their ownership of our services – all whilst strengthening their community’s resilience. It can be said that you don’t really understand a situation until you crunch the numbers. As educators in health, safety, and first aid, that rings true for us. We know our side of the numbers, like how cardiovascular disease is the #1 cause of death in America with 877,000 individuals succumbing to it every year. But what about the public? What do they want to know about heart health and first aid? So, we crunched the numbers. And we found some eye-opening stats. Like how 60% of Americans who suffer from cardiac arrest away from home are never helped by someone who knows CPR, yet more than 60% of every state’s search traffic shows residents want to learn more about CPR training. According to the New England Journal of Medicine, CPR training is less commonly conducted in Black and Hispanic communities and dispatcher-assisted bystander CPR may not be as available as in White communities. Today serves as a reminder that anyone can learn basic CPR skills and potentially save a life in the event of a cardiac arrest. Restart a Heart Day encourages individuals, schools, organizations, and communities to participate in CPR training and to become equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to respond to emergencies effectively. Together, we can change the statistics that of the 350,000 cardiac arrests that happen outside the hospital, 90% of those individuals die, largely due to the fact they do not receive timely CPR. According to the American Heart Association, CPR that is performed quickly can double or triple a person’s chance of survival.
