My heart is rooting for the brave souls trying to build a leading-edge fab more or less from scratch, but my gut says it's impossible. "An expensive exercise in futility," said (retired) TSMC founder Morris Chang about his company's plans to build a chip plant in Phoenix, USA - a country that, at least on paper, has retained the expertise to manufacture at the leading edge. Japan, on the other hand, was stuck at 40ish nm. It won't be because of lack of funding, determination or funding, but I don't think Rapidus Corporation can meet it's current goals. I ???? think, however, Japan will move it's semiconductor ecosystem forward in significant ways. https://lnkd.in/gHKFX6dD #chips #semiconductors #geopolitics

?? After TSMC confirmed to start construction of its first fab in Dresden, Germany, in the fourth quarter of 2024, Intel would delay its construction of the fabs in Magdeburg? ?? Though the semiconductor giant reached an agreement with Germany in 2023, with an investment plan involving investing over EUR 30 billion to construct two new fabs in Magdeburg, until recently, the EU Competition Authority has not yet approved the around EUR 10 billion subsidy it has promised. The topsoil removal process, as required by law, thus, has been rescheduled to May 2025. ??Read more about Intel’s latest update on the Germany fabs’ progress: https://buff.ly/4bZpvKh ?? #Intel #Magdeburg #Germany# TSMC

?? Breaking news! TSMC awarded $5bn in CHIPS funding as of last week. Terms of the grant are yet to be finalized. ? ??Moov’s Take: This news follows Japan’s recent award of around $5bn to TSMC. As the leading global semiconductor foundry looks to secure capacity by expanding geographically outside of Taiwan, we expect to see continued investment by TSMC in the US, in markets like Arizona, New Mexico, Ohio and Oregon. Sources say the $5bn in CHIPS funding, which must be used for capital investment in the US, will likely go toward TSMC’s $40bn construction of two fabs in Arizona. Fab 21 phase 1 will focus on 5nm-class process technologies, while the second fab known as Fab 21 phase 2 will focus on 3nm-class production processes.? ?
