Rising carer numbers and flat budgets? ?? Supporting unpaid carers doesn’t have to mean increasing budgets... For some Scottish councils, digital carer support can be transformational in reaching more carers, particularly in more rural areas. See our example with NHS Highland and how we're supporting carers cost-effectively. #UnpaidCarers #CarerSupport #Scotland #TheHighlands #CostEffectiveSolutions

Very insightful Webinar session “Embedding carer recognition and support through legislation” run & facilitated by Elena Katrakis of Carers NSW on Carer Legislation, focusing on the experience in both the UK & US. Carer Legislation issues of concern were noted as: - form over substance particularly when it comes to financial assistance to carers (eg Carers leave is unpaid in the UK) - Inconsistent implementation on the ground - Increased Outpatient treatment (in US) comes with a transfer of risk of care to the Carer & sometimes need sign a commitment to be available 24x7 - Rights to Carer breaks (in Scotland) is both implementation (& being available across all regional areas) & funding challenged - Quoted that the UK is losing 3 million people out of the workforce/ economy & no longer using their training / experience to full time caring As we advocate for the supports in response to the needs of unpaid Carers in Australia being imbedded in Legislation & consistently implemented, it is important to learn from the experience of other countries.

To mark #CarersRightsDay today, our Chair, Councillor Louise Gittins has launched a new briefing showcasing how a joined-up approach to supporting young carers can help make a difference to their lives and their families. ? ‘Embedding ‘No Wrong Doors for Young Carers’’ explains how Leeds City Council, Family Action and Leeds Community Healthcare NHS Trust have used our ‘No Wrong Doors for Young Carers' memorandum of understanding (MoU) to reduce waiting times for assessments, increase staff awareness, increase the number of young carers being identified and provide earlier interventions. The MoU, designed by our sector-led improvement Partners in Care and Health and Carers Trust, aims to help embed a whole-system approach to identifying and supporting young carers, young adult carers and their families, and improve joint working between adult and children's social care services, integrated care boards and other key partners. ? A CPR kiosk? The jury is out! Increasing awareness about CPR is undoubtedly valuable, especially in critical settings like hospitals. While CPR kiosks can serve as a convenient tool for refreshing skills, I share the concern about the potential risk of peoples perception that it replaces proper training. In-person CPR training offers invaluable hands-on experience, scenario simulations, and guidance from certified instructors, which can't be entirely replicated by kiosks. It's essential to ensure that while integrating technology like CPR kiosks, we continue to prioritise comprehensive training programs to equip healthcare professionals and the public with the necessary skills and confidence to respond effectively in emergencies. Hopefully this initiative can complement existing training efforts and serve as a supplementary tool rather than a substitute. Looking forward to seeing how this innovation evolves in enhancing CPR awareness and preparedness. What are your thoughts? ?? #workplacetraining #firstaidtraining #CPR

“If there was a simple measure of the difference made to carers, we would have it. Is it time we start insisting on demonstrable outcomes against government grants? In the last 10 years we have seen enormous amounts of taxpayer funds distributed to the Aged Care sector in the way of commonwealth and state grants yet little improvement or positive outcomes have materialised. There is also a significant conflict of interest in a number of the transactions. $15 million provided to a culturally specific aged care provider in Sydney to build a nursing home that has never been built. $5 million given to a private company to sell their pain assessment device. $5 million to a celebrity cook. Millions provided to one company who then pays their sister company to run conferences (so effectively paying itself). Millions provided to build more aged care facilities yet we are told building applications have plummeted. #agedcare #agedcareaustralia
