We wish to extend our sincere congratulations to SCORE client Swan 4 Kids on being named the Top Winner of the 2024 Central Penn Business Journal Non-Profit Organization Award. The Central Penn Business Journal’s annual Nonprofit Innovation Awards event recognizes local 501(c)(3) nonprofits that have implemented new innovations to improve their organization or the people they serve in the past 18 months. “The problem that SWAN is addressing is this - over 81,000 children in Pennsylvania have a parent in prison. Incarceration has been recognized as a traumatic and adverse childhood experience. When their parents go to prison, a child may experience the trauma of separation and abandonment, as well as homelessness and continued or deepening poverty. This often results in behavioral issues and substandard academic performance. The other problem that we're addressing is the mental health professional shortage in the United States. Pennsylvania is among 42 states identified as having a severe shortage of childhood and adolescent psychologists. For young people experiencing foster care, turning 17 marks the countdown to aging out. For 50%, the criminal legal system is already familiar. These young people are the most at-risk teenagers in our communities. Without their practical and emotional needs being met, they’re vulnerable to forming unhealthy attachments and making poor choices, over and over again. The “foster care to prison pipeline” is well-documented. It’s also preventable. Thriving requires stability, normalcy, and a consistent adult presence — someone who sees their potential and believes in them. Someone who intentionally guides them toward a brighter future. National Nonprofit Day reminds us of the vital role nonprofits play in building stronger communities, supporting those in need, and driving positive change. CCSA was started to address the stigma around substance use and addiction within Jewish communities. Through community awareness events and school programs, we have extended our reach far beyond what we could have imagined. “Good morning, it’s me…you up?” she says softly over the phone. It’s 6:30am, and this is their daily routine. The Love Box volunteer calls this 13-year-old in the dark wee hours every morning to get her off to school. They sit in silence together a minute longer. “I’m up,” the teen says. “Great - go brush your teeth. Have a good day, hon,” the volunteer says before they hang up. This girl has been in and out of care for most of her life, now with a relative who was not prepared to raise a child. She has safety, and a bed to sleep in, but not a lot of any other built-in support. Her granddad is doing the best he can, but the Love Box group of volunteers that have rallied around them have been crucial. Life changing. The majority of kids in foster care on the Olympic Peninsula are not with licensed caregivers. They're with grandparents or aunts and uncles who were not expecting to be parents - let alone to a child who has experienced profound neglect and abuse. Saying yes to this role is hard. It's beautiful and necessary, but so hard. And this is why Olympic Angels exists. When we start looking after our neighbors child like we would for our own, that’s when real change can happen. That’s when they are not overlooked. We help get them to school, we notice if they struggle reading, we navigate getting them to the doctor. Caregivers step in when a family falls, and sometimes they need extra support. That's where you come in. One of the unique strengths of AARC’s model is its semi-residential component. While the youth spend their days at the AARC facility, they do not stay overnight. Instead, they go to the homes of other families further advanced in the program who have opened their Recovery Homes to provide support for clients in their sobriety. Thank you Spencer for sharing your experience to help others ?? Although this may seem initially overwhelming, this therapeutic component is a critical part of the healing process for families and youths. The supportive relationships build in our Recovery Home environment provide a community of support and strength throughout treatment and post-graduation. As well as enhancing bonds, the Recovery Homes provide a space for clients to re-integrate into a family system, recognizing that all homes have rules!
