This National School Psychology Awareness Week (November 11–15), we honor the vital work of school psychologists and educators across Pennsylvania in helping students thrive, fostering resilience, and supporting our communities. But Pennsylvania has room for improvement in providing adequate mental health resources: -Only 1 school psychologist for every 997 students (recommended: 1:500) - Just 1 school social worker for every 3,416 students (recommended: 1:250) - And 1 school counselor for every 369 students (recommended: 1:250) (America's School Mental Health Report Card 2022) Our school staff providing mental health support need our support. Let’s celebrate their contributions and advocate for the resources needed to ensure every student succeeds. Together, we can build a better future for Pennsylvania’s children.

As a child and educational psychologist, adopting a compassionate approach is the paramount to everything I do. Compassion, in its essence, is the sensitivity to the challenges of others and the genuine desire to alleviate it. ?In the realm of child psychology, this approach is not just beneficial; it's a cornerstone for effective practice. Children are in a critical stage of development. Their experiences with adults, including psychologists, significantly shape their worldview, self-esteem, and coping mechanisms.? A compassionate psychologist provides a safe, nurturing environment, essential for children to express themselves and work through their challenges. This safety net can be particularly transformative for children who have experienced trauma or come from unstable backgrounds. Furthermore, my role extends beyond just working with the child but also with parents. Acknowledging and validating parents' emotions is vital. Raising a child who is experiencing behavioural or developmental challenges can be incredibly challenging and emotionally taxing.? A psychologist's understanding and validation of these struggles can be profoundly relieving for parents. It also encourages open communication, where parents feel comfortable sharing their concerns and seeking help. Is your child struggling? ?? At Nurseline Community Services, we understand that schools are more than just places for academic learning—they are vital environments for fostering mental health. Here’s how schools can make a significant impact: 1. Schools that promote a culture of inclusivity and support help students feel safe and valued. This sense of belonging is essential for their mental well-being. 2. Integrating mental health education into the curriculum helps students understand and manage their emotions. Teaching young people about mental health reduces stigma and encourages them to seek help when needed. 3. Providing access to counsellors and mental health professionals within schools ensures that students can get the support they need. Early intervention by these professionals can prevent issues from escalating. 4. Equipping teachers with the knowledge to recognise signs of mental health issues and how to respond appropriately is crucial. Trained teachers can provide immediate support and guide students to the right resources. 5. Encouraging peer support groups creates a community where students can share their experiences and support one another. These programs foster empathy and understanding among students. What are your thoughts on the role of schools in mental health? How can we further support our students' well-being?

The Ohio Council of Behavioral Health & Family Services Providers came out with their 2024 School-Based Behavioral Health Services. They did a fabulous job on it and I'm so eager to share their recommendations for Ohio Policymakers! There is a *significant* lack of funding for school-based services across the state of Ohio, particularly in our Tier I and Tier II levels. This is scary, considering the intensity of mental health concerns in our school systems. I am constantly getting phone calls from schools and districts, begging for help addressing mental health issues in schools. Unfortunately, lack of funding is always the biggest barrier - most services are only reimbursed at a Tier III individual level which leaves the majority of students without access to mental health services. This means we are only able to address a concern when it has escalated to a point that it is almost unmanageable. It would be amazing if we could fund more preventative measures to ensure these concerns don't spiral out of control! If you are a policy maker, I urge you to add school-based mental health funding to your list of priorities this year. Our children, adolescents, families, and teachers are worth it! The good news is, there are a TON of school-based and early childhood mental health programs out there ready and willing to help wherever we can! If you're interested in exploring what The Buckeye Ranch can do for your school and district, please reach out! We are always willing to help where we can!
