When people ask me these days to introduce myself and tell a little bit about my career to date, I don't even know where to start... Usually, I kick it off with the standard '9+ years in consulting.' I began my career in Zurich, consulting our Financial Services clients, then spent around 6 years in Australia, focusing on ER&I and Innovation. But what most people don't know is that I started working way earlier... The Swiss ???? education system is a different from other countries; we have a dual education system. After year 9, you can either decide to do another 4 years of 'high school' (we call it achieving higher maturity) or join a 3 to 4-year apprenticeship program. It's not just for technical jobs but also for commercial jobs (office-based jobs, like bank clerks, travel agents, IT staff, etc.). In Australia, people sometimes refer to it as International Baccalaureate. So when I was 15, I applied at a few banks and got into a 3-year apprenticeship at Bank Coop (the equivalent of if Woolies or Coles had a bank in Switzerland). It was an intense start, transitioning from sitting with your friends in school for a few hours a day to working 8.4 hours straight, learning new practical things every day, and facing the pressure of client interactions almost from day one. I spent 3 days every week at the bank and 2 days in school. It was a great experience and made me mature quickly. Combining the theoretical knowledge learned in school with the hands-on practical experience at work made it very tangible. ??How did you start your career? ??Where did you start to be where you are today? #tobiasfanger #banker #finance #consulting

Our Black History Month Alumni Spotlight series is here and with it are some inspiring and critical thoughts from CBS Alum Chuck Roberts ’18, who, among other roles, is the Executive Vice President of Metro New York Chapter National Black MBA Association. We asked Chuck a few important questions to understand his perspective on the importance of his work with the association, what challenges he faces, and what knowledge he has found most useful to him in his journey. What is the core aspect of your work with the National Black MBA Association (NBMBAA) and why do you feel it is so important and impactful? Since June 2020, I have developed 15 premium virtual career fairs (PVCF) that have connected Fortune 500 corporations with close to 9,000 applicants from our community. Our goal was to diminish the myth that corporations cannot find qualified diverse applicants. Our next PVCF is February 15, 2024. After reading a 2019 Federal Reserve Bank report indicating that people of color had 10% of the net wealth of whites, we worked with NASDAQ to develop a much-needed financial literacy series – “Rewriting Your Future with Financial Literacy.” It is the small steps, like this one, that will one day make a major change in the reduction of the wealth gap. What is the most common challenge you face or help others overcome in your work? A challenge I face is the self-doubt of a positive accomplishment. During strategy stages, I have felt the need to keep what is planned to myself. This habit can deprive others of the opportunity to gain experience during developmental stages, however I do suggest entrepreneurs keep plans close to the vest during implementation stages. And once you are up and running, tell the world your story because people buy from people. Are there any resources, pieces of advice, or knowledge you feel have helped you the most in your journey to get where you are now? Do you have any specific advice you might offer to other Black founders or investors owners in the community? New companies are not an overnight project, do your homework to know your market and competition, try not to go too far into debt, don’t give up your day job, apply for grants, have someone close to you to discuss your actions and plans, follow your business plan and routinely check it to see how you are doing, learn from your mistakes and your successes, hire wisely. Pray. You can do this! We really appreciate Chuck taking the time to share his knowledge and ideas with our community. You can stay up to date with his work with the NBMBAA on their website: https://lnkd.in/gaRQdu3z Stay tuned for further installments of our BHM alumni spotlight celebration in the coming weeks. #columbiabusinessschool #alumni #blackhistorymonth #venturecapital #founders

Graduate schemes; they’re the be-all and end-all for students, right? The sign of having made it. The catalyst to the next 40 years of your career. Yes… and no. Don’t get me wrong - grad schemes are great. If you are fortunate enough to get on one, take advantage of everything that will - genuinely - land in your lap. The amount of thought, time, effort and money spent on each graduate is phenomenal. But if that’s not your journey, please do not fret. You haven’t lost. You’ve barely even started. When I didn’t get on a grad scheme after uni (see previous posts), I thought I’d be left behind. Failure. Career over before it had even started. To the extend that when I’d been working for a number of years, I joined Barclays and looked into whether there was a programme to join the grad scheme as an internal candidate. What was so appealing about grad schemes? Aside from the glitz and glam, it was that you got to try lots of areas… usually 6-9 month rotations spanning several years. I knew I wanted that experience… so I created it myself. I moved around companies and roles to try different things. That’s where I discovered my love of digital and customer, and my preference for large, complex organisations. Roll on 15+ years since I graduated (??), I am so pleased to be where I am. Grad scheme or no. So I guess what I’m saying is; if you get on a grad scheme, fantastic! Well done. If you don’t, do not worry. Taste different jobs and find your fit. Work your way up. Enjoy the journey. Oh, and one final thought… graduate schemes do not close off to you after your immediate graduation! Try again for more schemes next year ??♂? #graduates #grads #earlycareers #students
