Most achievements or changes that are worth their salt are made by thousands of small decisions that are a little bit better than the (perhaps more tempting) alternative would have been. But look at any movie, and the part where this grueling process is actually executed is turned into an exciting three-minute montage set to upbeat music so you can feel the change happening in fast-forward and get to the fun part of cashing in. Maybe there's one big setback for dramatic effect, but surely not a hundred tiny ones throughout, and the resolution is usually made to look just as straightforward as the first montage. https://lnkd.in/dY-Xeb6t

How was your weekend? Mine’s was great, I had a wee gig at the local music club. Did it go well?.. Yeah. Was it perfect? Nope. ?? I forgot a few lines in one of the songs, I don’t know if it was nerves or the pints of Tennent’s, but it certainly wasn’t down to lack of planning because I had been practicing for weeks. Last night I went to a concert featuring two of the big bands from my college years. The Gin Blossoms and Toad the Wet Sprocket. Some music is timeless. This music is not. I think it’s great music but it is clearly tied to the 90s with a start and end date. 99% of the crowd was?within 5 years of me age-wise in either direction. The music was nostalgic and the bands held up. But this music came from an era in between the flash of hair metal and the highly produced 2000s pop. Just like the music itself, the stage show is understated. No lasers, no fireworks, no costume changes, not much banter, no multimedia, no back up singers and dancers. It’s deliberately not flashy. My favorite business consultant of all time, Vito Corleone, once said that there is no greater natural advantage in life than having an enemy overestimate your faults, unless it was to have a friend underestimate your virtues. Al Capone once said “Don't mistake my kindness for weakness. I am kind to everyone.” I know I couldn’t be using more GenX dad references than mobsters and the Gin Blossoms, but bear with me. I have colleagues who have worked hard and smart to build successful businesses and accumulate multigenerational wealth. I know small businesses that beat out bigger and better-funded competitors every day. The richest people I know drive Toyotas. I’m way more likely to hire people who recognize their faults, are nice to everyone and carry themselves with humility than those who see themselves as bulletproof and walk with a swagger. Some of the best, happiest, and most successful people I know have zero ego, are self-deprecating, and are kind to everyone. I believe the most confident people are also the most humble. When you feel good about who you are, you’re quick to acknowledge your faults, don’t cut down others and feel good about having nothing to prove.

I do not have a word for the year, I have a Contextual Beacon (Puffs out chest, puts hands on hips and looks wistfully up to the left, while inspirational and uplifting music begins) Ok, technically I do have a single word that guides my intentions and actions for 2024, calling it a contextual beacon* gives it the gravitas it deserves. It is not so simple to just pick a word, serious thought and consideration needs to go into it to get the real value associated with it. We're so quick to deem our interests as "elite". We like a certain thing, so it must be great, right? But what if we listen instead of talk? One of the things I love about music is that it's an immediate way to knock down the "vulnerability barrier" when getting to know someone. Some of my favorite questions are: What's the last concert you went to? Who are you listening to these days? Where'd you first hear that band? How far have you traveled to see a show?
