A Personal Note on Keeping Our Children Safe This Summer As the CEO of the Dallas Children’s Advocacy Center, I often share professional advice on child safety. But more importantly, as a mother and grandmother to two adorable little boys, I've lived these precautions every day. With summer upon us, many families are gearing up for camps and sleepovers, and it’s crucial to remember that you are your child’s primary advocate and protector. Last week, I had the privilege of speaking on the Morning on Merit Street about summer safety, where I elaborated on the following tips based on both my professional experience and personal practice: 1. For Camp Drop-offs: Ask About Ratios: What is the camper to counselor ratio? Inquire About Safety Protocols: What does the background check and training process for counselors involve? Understand Communication Protocols: How will you be notified if an incident occurs? 2. For Sleepovers: Know the Environment: Who else might have access to your child during the stay? Who might visit the house during the sleepover? Ask About Plans: Where will they go while your child is in their care? 3. Empower Your Child: Teach your children that if they ever feel uncomfortable, it's okay to speak up and remove themselves from a situation. Ensure they know how to reach you at any time and understand you are always available for them. These aren’t just professional tips; they’re actions I took to ensure the safety of my own children. As we enjoy the summer, let's make it safe and memorable for our little ones by being proactive and informed. #ChildSafety #SummerSafety #ParentingTips #Leadership #ChildAdvocacy

Today marks 21 years since the heartbreaking loss of Daniel Morcombe. His tragic passing serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of protecting our children from predators, those who may seek to exploit or harm them. As we reflect on this anniversary, I am reminded of our collective responsibility as parents, caregivers, and community members to keep children safe. Through both personal experience and professional commitment, I’ve come to understand how vital it is that we empower children with knowledge, guidance, and support to protect themselves. By teaching them about their rights, setting clear boundaries, and encouraging open communication, we can take meaningful steps in preventing harm. To protect our children from harm, we must teach them about boundaries and consent, helping them to understand that their bodies belong to them, and they can say "NO" when uncomfortable. Educating them about recognising risks, both online and offline, is essential, as is emphasising that a "STRANGER" is anyone they don’t know or trust. Encouraging the buddy system and promoting open communication ensures children know they can always reach out to a trusted adult. Additionally, using parental controls and monitoring online activity is crucial to protect against digital predators. Daniel Morcombe's story remains a painful reminder of why we must remain vigilant and proactive in creating safe environments for our children. By taking concrete steps today to educate, support, and empower children, we can help ensure they grow up with a sense of security and the tools to protect themselves. Let’s honour Daniel’s memory by continuing to work together to make the world a safer place for every child.
Today marks 21 years since Daniel's tragic passing. His legacy continues through the work of the Daniel Morcombe Foundation. We honour his memory by keeping children safe and raising awareness about child safety. #NeverForgotten #DanielMorcombe #KeepingKidsSafe

This Child Protection Week, we're focusing on a critical aspect of our work at OzChild: ensuring children and young people are active participants in decisions that shape their lives. Too often, children and young people feel left out, asking, “Why wasn’t I consulted?” or “Why didn’t I get a say?” We believe direct involvement and meaningful participation is key to truly empowering young people. At OzChild, we’ve taken concrete steps to change this by dedicating resources to amplify the voices of children and young people. Our Child and Young Person Engagement Advisor plays a pivotal role in educating and equipping young people with the knowledge and confidence to actively participate in decision-making, and giving them opportunities to do so. This is about more than just offering them a seat at the table—it’s about ensuring they feel prepared and empowered to use it. We are already seeing the positive impact of this approach as it reshapes our service delivery. Let’s all continue to champion the voices of children and young people—because every conversation matters in shaping a better future and service system for children, young people and families.
