FMPs are the cornerstone of post Brexit (Fisheries Act) fisheries management in the U.K. If you care about your / the fishery concerned it’s important to comment and feedback constructively, but also it needs to be understood that the plans are adaptive and will almost certainly be adapted over time. So, even if your issue or concern isn’t considered in the first iteration of the plan, stick with the process. The phrase don’t let perfect be the enemy of the good is pertinent here I believe. Also please realise that many (if not most) of those people leading the plans are employees of non-governmental organisations who have offered their time and commitment without additional reward. FMPs are the tool to reverse decades of centralised and often dysfunctional fisheries management in the UK’s waters and fisheries (particularly non-quota and/or shelfisheries). Excellent to see community members being empowered to analyse their own data here. Many years ago in Watamu, Kenya, I supported a similar approach that led to a still standing community decision to no longer let seasonal Tanzanian ringnet fishers operate from the local landing site. The sustainability of their mixed small/juvenile fish harvests were questioned by local community members, who also then saw for themselves in data how foreign vessels flooding their local market with a cheap mix of small fish hurt their own fleets financial/market performance. We've since learnt that the sand those ringnetters throw into the water to disguise their net during setting was also likely to be damaging coral reefs too. The too common alternative framing of community members as either unskilled data collectors for clever distant data analysers, or as inherently disobedient fishers, needs to change. The best outcomes of this approach include that communities analysing their own data helps them practically understand fisheries management procedures and the value of data based decision making for themselves. It also cost me nothing but time to teach basic processes/principles and develop simple data analysis templates to start with. A major highlight is that it also incentivises accurate data provision and collection in the long term, without necessitating foreign support or money for continuation. Maybe the potential for enabling such independence motivates some to still prefer the old approach..... #SSF #fisheries #datacollection #fisheriesmanagement #coastalcommunities
