We're currently working with local farms to plant trees on their land. Agroforestry is a way of managing land where trees, livestock and/or crops are raised together to diversify and/or increase production. Planting orchards on farms also promotes biodiversity and food production. Watch this short video with Lucy at Barfoots Farm about why they believe trees on farms is important. You can also find out more about their project here: https://lnkd.in/eWAruwMi If you’d like to find out more information about the trees on farms scheme, please contact our Tree Project Officer, Sophie, by emailing: [email protected]

???? #ResearchWednesday: Aquaponics in Action – Can It Thrive in Your #Community? Aquaponics combines #fish farming (aquaculture) and #plant growing (hydroponics) into a #sustainable, food-producing powerhouse! But would it thrive in your community? ?? A 2014 international survey on commercial aquaponics production and profitability gives us some answers: ? ???? New Publication Alert! We are xcited to share our latest review on the evolution of mariculture in mainland Tanzania. This in-depth study explores how mariculture practices, such as seaweed, finfish, and shellfish farming, can transform Tanzania's coastal communities by driving economic growth, enhancing food security, and promoting sustainable resource use. Seaweed farming has achieved notable commercial success, but the potential for finfish and shellfish farming remains largely untapped, presenting unique opportunities for growth and development. This review examines past achievements and future prospects, illustrating how mariculture can play a pivotal role in unlocking the full potential of Tanzania's marine resources. ?? Agroforestry systems: A sustainable solution?? Agroforestry systems combine trees with crops and livestock in the same space, optimizing the use of natural resources and recovering lost biodiversity. ??At INARSAC, we focus on reforestation as a key solution to restore degraded areas. What was once a 200-hectare estate dedicated to intensive livestock farming is now a regenerated space thanks to the implementation of these systems????. The time to drive sustainability is today??! #Sustainability #Environment #Conservation

As an agronomist and founder of Abuti Spinach, I'm passionate about empowering small-scale farmers in Africa through innovative approaches. One area that's close to my heart is promoting climate-resilient agriculture in drought-prone regions. Climate-resilient agriculture is an innovative approach that seeks to adapt farming practices to the changing climate while ensuring food security. This involves using techniques such as conservation agriculture, agroforestry, and climate-smart agriculture to improve crop yields and reduce the risks associated with climate change. I believe that by adopting these approaches, we can help small-scale farmers in drought-prone regions to build resilience and improve their livelihoods. What are some of the ways that you think we can promote climate-resilient agriculture in Africa? Let's work together to create a more sustainable and food-secure future for all. #abutispinach #Agvocate #AgroDiplomacy ??????[Collection]

As an agronomist and founder of Abuti Spinach, I'm excited to share with you a recent discovery that highlights the importance of collective efforts in enhancing natural ecosystems to address global agricultural challenges. A conference I came across showcased the vital role barn owls play in agriculture, serving as a natural form of pest control and maintaining ecosystem balance. This got me thinking - what other ways can we work together to promote sustainable agriculture practices and support small-scale farmers in Africa? By embracing innovative approaches and valuing biodiversity, we can create a more resilient food system for all. How can you contribute to this effort and join the movement towards a more sustainable agricultural future? ?????? #abutispinach #Agvocate #AgroDiplomacy[Collection]

Today, I had the pleasure of meeting Rui Almeida, Board Chairman of EUFRAS, and Luís Mira da Silva, Manager of CONSULAI. ? ??EUFRAS is a dynamic network that unites advisory organizations across Europe to foster collaboration knowledge, while Consulai is Portugal’s largest consulting firm in the agricultural, food, forestry, sea, and rural development sectors. ? We had an insightful discussion about the importance of quality advisory services for advancing the (organic) agri-food sector towards sustainability. ? We also explored common initiatives to encourage young generations to engage in food and farming, whether as advisors, farmers, or food entrepreneurs.?? ? Looking forward to continuing our conversation in the coming months! ?? #EUOrganic #OrganicIsPartOfTheSolution

‘Land Sparing’ or ‘Land Sharing’? ?? An important idea that is being asked in the intersection of agriculture and conservation: should you increase an area of land that is used for agriculture, where farming practices enable biodiversity to be maintained within the landscape (Land Sharing), or should you intensify production on land already in use, restoring or creating non-farmland habitat in agricultural landscapes (Land Sparing)? In real life terms, it might seem straight forward, but there’s a number of complexities. What we can’t choose to do is nothing, because the population is growing and the demand for resources along with it. ?? Join us at the LandAlive food and farming conference later this month as we seek to unpick this question: www.landalive.co.uk

This is a great example of taking circular economy to the next level. Aquaculture by-products hold great prospects not just for the industry itself but also for the aquafeed industry as a component in insect meal increasing feeds performance, nutritional values and sustainability. Kudos for Patagonia King Salmon and Natpro Chile for promoting this important initiative. Hoping to see more initiatives like this and bureaucrats also in the #EU and elsewhere in the world pushing forward this subject. IPIFF (International Platform of Insects for Food and Feed) European Commission European Aquaculture Society Global Salmon Initiative #aquaculture #aquafeed #salmon #insectmeal #circulareconomy #sustainability
Here's yet another "seastainable" milestone in forward farming our Patagonian Kings! Our increased sustainability efforts are coming full circle in our collaboration with sister company Natpro Chile. Together, we developed a unique salmon feed in which insect meal plays a prominent role. And not just any insect meal; our advanced aquaculture's organic by-products are a key ingredient for Natpro Chile's black soldier fly larvae. The larvae are subsequently processed into highly nutritious insect meal, which in turn feeds our salmon. A royally circular diet for our regal Kings! #PatagoniaKingSalmon #Natpro #sustainablefishfarm #forwardfarmed #aquaculture #chile #fishfeed Miguel Angel Leiva Hans Den Bieman Eduardo Waldron Ernesto Cobo Oberpaur
