#SCOTUS' decision on #JohnsonVGrantsPass allows local governments to punish people for sleeping outside when they have nowhere else to go, even though experts agree that criminalizing homelessness only makes it harder to solve. Luckily, the rest of this week’s news has the Bay Area poised to double down on proven solutions to homelessness. ? On Tuesday, we released our Regional Action Plan that serves as a roadmap to making homelessness rare, brief and one-time. ? On Wednesday, MTC voted to put a $20 billion affordable housing bond measure on the November ballot of all Bay Area counties. ? On Thursday, the Legislature voted to put structural change to enable housing solutions on the ballot statewide through ACA 10. Despite the disappointing ruling made earlier today, we cannot afford to let it distract us from the proven solutions right in front of us. Let’s come together and choose a better future for the Bay Area, where everyone in our region can stay here and thrive. https://lnkd.in/gz9ZDqKP

?? Addressing homelessness is a moral imperative -- This week, I had the privilege of attending a legislative briefing at the RI state house, where the urgency of addressing homelessness was underscored by passionate advocates and representatives. A key takeaway was the undeniable strain felt across our state due to the rising number of unhoused individuals, regardless of income bracket. The ripple effects touch every aspect of our community, from increased pressure on essential services to the heartbreaking reality of families, including children, sleeping on the streets due to insufficient shelter beds. The message was clear: housing is a basic right, and it's imperative that we invest in solutions now. Every budget cut has a human impact, hindering the progress we've worked so hard to achieve. Let's not falter in our efforts. Together, we can make a difference and ensure that every member of our community has a place to call home. #EndHomelessness #CommunitySupport #InvestInHousing ??? For decades, the U.S. federal government has dominated the country’s response to homelessness via their policy response known as Housing First. It has been an unmitigated disaster. During the past decade, federal homelessness policies have failed to stem the growing desperation among America’s homeless, and by most metrics, it appears to have only added to their suffering. The federal government’s preoccupation with Housing First is unlikely to change quickly. In this new report from Devon Kurtz of the Cicero Institute, find out how Housing First has failed–and what states can do to foster state-level innovation in their approaches to homelessness. The link the the report is in the first comment.

??? Exciting news from the ACT! Senator David Pocock and member of North Sydney Kylea Tink have joined forces to introduce the National Housing and Homelessness Plan Bill 2024, into both the Senate and the House of Representatives. The proposed bill advocates for the recognition of ADEQUATE HOUSING AS A FUNDAMENTAL HUMAN RIGHT FOR ALL Australians by mandating the federal government to develop a comprehensive and long-term strategy to reform and improve Australia’s struggling issues of housing affordability, availability, and homelessness. If passed, it would establish a 10-year plan, ensuring sustained progress beyond political cycles. Key highlights include: ?? Creation of a National Housing Consumer Council ?? Establishment of a Housing and Homelessness Advocate for oversight ?? Enhanced transparency and accountability of decisions made We couldn’t agree more with Ms Tink’s words “Amid a new wave of homelessness, worsening rental affordability and intergenerational inequity, and housing affordability surging to ‘impossible’ levels, we urgently need to come together to deliver a meaningful, legislated, national approach to ensure all Australians have adequate housing.” This is news we love to see, as every person deserve the basic human right to an adequate standard of living, which includes the right to adequate housing ?? For dozens of years, low federal housing investments have resulted in high rates of homelessness. More people are being pushed into homelessness than ever before because they simply can’t afford to stay in their housing, and can’t afford their basic needs. And our current homelessness crisis is a direct consequence of decades of inaction to reduce the cost of housing. https://buff.ly/409phgx

We currently support 47 families in motels, including 49 children through the state government's Immediate Housing Response for Families. While providing immediate shelter, motels are not suitable for long-term living. The conditions are cramped and do not support the basic needs and stability required for a young family. Unfortunately, there are limited options available, and even securing emergency motel accommodation is challenging due to the extreme shortage of available rooms. Investment in early-intervention support and stable housing for young people is critical to break the cycle of long-term homelessness into adulthood. Bipartisan support ensures we can continue to keep young people safe and prevent them from slipping into a cycle of homelessness - while we work to create longer-term solutions. ??Read the full tory in p4 of today's Courier Mail: https://lnkd.in/gihdkEyP ??Read QCOSS's 'Breaking Ground' housing crisis update: https://lnkd.in/guafer8z #NewFutures #BrisYouth #BYS #EndYouthHomelessness #PawsonReport #QCOSS
