In 2012, #MidnightMoment was birthed. In 2024, Times Square Arts, the Times Square Alliance Public Art Program, has continued to push the mission to bring the most contemporary artists to the widest, most diverse audience. Jean Cooney and the team of TSqArts and TJ Witham's relentless communications push (since the beginning!) has integrated it into the identity of #TimesSquare. The artist roster and related events to bring it to a live and digital experience has challenged content ingenuity of cultural and commercial creators for 12 years now. AND it has entertained and excited the everyday New Yorker or visitor. When we founded the effort, building on from work of artist Jane Dickson, Public Art Fund, Creative Time, PERFORMA and Chashama Admin, we knew that it's success would be in the longevity, the growth and its ability to be an instigator for other cities, commercial landscapes and artists. 'If you can make it there, you can make it anywhere..' [ps. please note these ambitions NYC digital efforts coincidently have/had female leaders]. Now it's a national news story; a topic in academic discourse; a recommendation from a cabbie and a treasured experience for artists. There was so much challenge and risk in the effort to coordinate so many blocks of #digital #realestate - for everyone. We couldn't guarantee what ROI would happen. I knew the effort wouldn't begin to really pay off until years 2-3, but now Times Square offers a countdown to midnight every night of the year; and every month it is different. Artists make our ordinary seem spectacular and our spectacular available in our ordinary day. #CreativePlacemaking and #CulturalPlacemaking is about finding ways in which we open that opportunity as frequently as possible. #urbandevelopment and #artists can share the ambition and addiction to risk for something greater. The public are ready for the unexpected; they live or visit urban environments for that. some of the founding team Times Square Advertising Coalition - TSAC / Tim Tompkins / Tom Harris / #KaManTse / Ellen Goldstein / Natascha Theis / Gary Winkler /Damian Santucci / Sean E. “It’s got to be one of the most monumental secrets hiding in plain sight”. Times Square Arts Director Jean Cooney talks to NBC News about Midnight Moment, the nightly program that transforms Times Square into a giant canvas for public art. October’s #MidnightMoment ‘Floating World’ by A.A Murakami and co-presented with artnet is on view nightly from 11:57pm to 12am, synchronized across 95 of our iconic billboards. The most central place to take it all in is on Duffy Square!

I often compare the art market to Hollywood: countless talented individuals aspire to achieve success and fame, yet only a select few actually do. Many artists dream of having their paintings showcased in prestigious museums and esteemed collections, but only a few achieve such recognition. Numerous factors must align for an artist to achieve global success, with skill merely serving as a prerequisite. In this report, we emphasize the pivotal role that gallerists play in discovering and nurturing artists' careers. Without an astute and well-connected gallerist, it is exceedingly challenging for an artist to attain significant success in the art world. #diversification #artinvesting #artinvestment #bluechipart
The modern art market has produced numerous iconic gallerists who have shaped artists’ careers and sold works to the world’s most prestigious private and public art collections. Read our brief report, where we take a closer look at the role of the gallerist and pay homage to Barbara Gladstone, one of the grande dames of the New York art trade, who passed away on June 16th. #arteducation #artinvesting #artinvestment #bluechipart

Art is innate to all humans, but it is today mostly framed as decorative business. The Fifth Element initiative by The Club of Rome questions this framing and enquires into the role of art in bringing about a societal transformation. We work with the Future Of Work Foundation and other partners to help humanity emerge from our current crises into desirable futures through art. Learn more ?? https://lnkd.in/dgg4VCSc

What a powerful example by one of our summer program alumni at Sotheby's Institute of Art as to what art history can do for the pre-college student. Her joy, enthusiasm, and curiosity are genuinely palpable! Many high school and college curriculums in Western society (and the USA especially) still focus on approaches that are reductive and deeply analytical. We stuff students with information and expertise that they can deploy in their future careers. They become experts in a subject or field but rarely practice the opportunity to synthesize across boundaries. Almost two decades ago, Daniel Pink ("A Whole New Mind”) made a case for investing in a skill he called “symphony” or “the capacity to synthesize rather than analyze; to see relationships between seemingly unrelated fields; to detect the broad patterns rather than deliver specific answers.” He argued that the ability to symphonize would become an important quality in a job market where straightforward, purely logical jobs will be increasingly taken by computers and outsourcing. I can’t think of a better “symphonizing” subject than Art History. At its best, art history is a synthesis of many subject areas including history, politics, chemistry, aesthetics, science, connoisseurship, economics, psychology, fashion, heritage law, technology, and anthropology, to name a few. And what better time to introduce students to art history than when they have not yet narrowed their focus to a single subject area? Art History offers pre-college students the opportunity to understand how our multi-faced world fits together as well as develop the capacity to think on a higher level and detect opportunities. The most creative people among us see relationships that the rest of us have never noticed. Art history is a breeding ground for breakthrough thought. Not to mention that spending time with art is, as my high-schoolers like to say "lit", "dope", "sick", "rad", "fire", "bet", and "awesome." #ArtHistory #precollege #multidisciplinarylearning
