Recently I attended the online Global Civility Summit 2024 which shared this statistic and it painted a stark picture of the challenges facing civic leaders today, with 72% rating the civility in their work environments as poor or very poor. Even more concerning, 21% reported that their families have faced harassment due to their public roles. After spending over a decade in municipal administration, I understand the toll incivility can take on governance and personal well-being. Attending the summit on October 10 was both sobering and inspiring - leaders from the U.S., Canada, and Australia came together not only to acknowledge these issues but to share actionable strategies to foster civility and trust within our communities.
