#RoyalFarWest #RideforCountryKids https://lnkd.in/gnZDK_5f Last week, along with 49 other riders and 20 support crew, I completed the 3 day Royal Far West ride for country kids fundraising cycle in beautiful, hilly, NSW far south coast (Merimbula, Bega, Eden, Bermagui).? During the hours in the saddle, your mind wanders and observations follow, such as..... although we were all individual cyclists, it was so noticeable how we joined as a team.?And how all of our?motivations were so totally in-sync.?We wanted to finish safely as a peloton, and not leave anyone behind.?We wanted to fulfil our commitments to our sponsors and smash our fundraising targets.?We were doing good things for ourselves?(fitness, enjoying the ride, the scenery, the camaraderie, the feeling of accomplishment) and as a natural consequence - as a natural byproduct - we were doing good for others. Total alignment. The Business Leaders I work with often?talk about goal alignment.?About energising and congruent plans and objectives.?Last week a bunch of cyclists of very varied ability who meet very infrequently, came together, and acheived this. Last night I had the unique opportunity of being a “fly on the wall” and getting a glimpse into what the culture and group outings are like at Zweig Group’s #1 Best Firm to Work For for 3 years in a row now. Yup, you guessed it, it’s Garver! Some friends of mine and I decided to try out the new K1 Speed in Rogers yesterday and were told that a company event would be wrapping up at 8 and that we could be worked in after it was over. No worries, we got some food and came back around 8 and sure enough, there seemed to be a Garver employee event going on. We proceeded to alternate races with the Garver group for the next couple hours and like us, they seemed to be having quite a grand time. They were even still going strong after we left! I truly believe that if you’ve built a company with staff that actively want to hang out with each other beyond 9:30pm, you’ve created something special. Hats off to Garver! As for K1 Speed, what a place! The carts are pretty dang fast and the track is well-maintained. The staff were also very friendly and helpful. The first cart I drove had a steering knuckle break mid-turn about halfway through (thankful for the shock-absorbing walls or my neck would be feeling it today) and they were happy to comp me another race that I plan on using soon. Highly recommend! Bottom Line/TLDR: Invest in your culture. It pays dividends with regards to marketing, recruiting and retention when the general public sees your employees having fun hanging out with each other. Also, that go-karting is a great way to build camaraderie among your team! #aecindustry #ElevateAEC #bestfirmstoworkfor

Great article about women jockeys. It wasn’t all that long ago when women even showing up at the racetrack wasn’t welcome or wanted. Only 0.9% women jockeys in the Kentucky Derby number is quite sobering. We had a horse in the Kentucky Derby in the 2017 starting lineup as a breeder and he finished 3rd. Even that is an accomplishment for a woman in racing, but there is still a way to go for the athletes. One of the important quotes in the article are that to get hired, a woman jockey must be good. But to get good, she needs opportunities to get better. Not dissimilar from other places where there are not enough women yet. Just installing women in higher positions isn’t enough, that can set them up to fail when they are not ready, and then cause a backlash that women are not good enough to lead. It is clear that opportunities and mentorship are crucial to close the skill and readiness gap.
