“I felt the safest when I was playing basketball.” ? That’s the feeling that Robert Castaneda, Co-Founder and Executive Director of Beyond The Ball, said motivated him to initiate sport- and play-based youth programming in Little Village.? ? Last Saturday during Hispanic Heritage Month, we unveiled three, newly refurbished courts featuring artwork from Mexican artist Roco Drilo to provide a space for youth to continue doing what they love and serve as a source of pride for the neighborhood. Reaching more than 1,500 youth annually, Beyond the Ball has used these courts for sports programming for more than 20 years. ? Like Rob, we believe in the power of basketball and its ability to unite people, and we look forward to watching the community enjoy the courts and experience the sense of connection and joy that comes from sports. ?? NYC High School Sports Opportunities Resource Guide ?? I'm excited to introduce a project I’ve been working on with my peers at YVote, including Ariel Segura , Abhirup Singh , Hakima, Aniah, Amelie Dejean, William, Talia & Tina Chen ! We’ve created a comprehensive resource guide aimed at addressing the inequalities in sports programs within NYC public high schools. ?? Why This Matters: In 2018, over 17,000 Black and Hispanic students attended schools with no PSAL teams. Additionally, PSAL spent 14% less on Black/Hispanic students than on their peers of other racial backgrounds in 2014. This disparity leaves many students in the Bronx, Manhattan, and other areas without year-round access to interscholastic sports.?? Our Solution: We’ve highlighted various programs and organizations actively working to level the playing field, including: PSAL All Access Program: Expands sports participation for students in schools with limited offerings. IntegrateNYC: Advocates for equity in public schools, focusing on disenfranchised communities. NYC Alliance for School Integration and Desegregation (nycASID): Raises awareness around segregation and encourages community action. New York Lawyers for the Public Interest (NYLPI): Supports civil rights advocacy, providing resources and legal support. ?? Get Involved: If you're passionate about sports equity, or know someone who could benefit from these resources, please check out our guide and share it within your networks. Together, we can ensure that every student has the opportunity to thrive through sports.???? #SportsEquity #PublicSchools #NYC #YVote #Changemakers #Education #SocialJustice

It has been a while since I was active on LinkedIn. I’m posting today about a cause that I care deeply about, The Jewish Grad Organization (JGO). I serve on JGO’s Alumni Board and am a proud supporter. They’re currently in the middle of their crowdfunding?campaign?which supports all their operations for the entire year, and I want to share a bit more about their important work as I think their mission might resonate with you all. ??? JGO is the only Jewish organization solely devoted to grad students, serving 156 graduate schools across North America. JGO’s mission is simple: to provide Jewish experiences, community, and a support system for graduate students on campuses throughout North America, through social and cultural programs and networking. The programs are student-led and overhead is extremely low. JGO is apolitical and welcomes students spanning the spectrum of religious and political beliefs.? ? We’ve all heard how antisemitism continues to rise throughout the U.S., particularly on campus. What is happening on campuses right now is scary, and how it affects students – especially young Jewish students – is tragic. But fortunately, there’s something you can do to help. Supporting JGO supports Jewish culture, identity, and pride in the midst of these hostile environments. It’s an on-ramp to Jewish community at a time when grad students are making big decisions about their futures. If you were to ask me why I support JGO, here are my top 3 reasons: 1. Empower Jewish Grad Students:?JGO empowers Jewish graduate students by funding grassroots student-led Jewish programs on campus — from Shabbat dinners and holiday celebrations to executive speakers to networking mixers. 2. Promote Jewish Values and Community:?JGO helps 10K+ grad students a year connect with their roots, celebrate traditions, form lifelong bonds, and be supported through whatever they may experience as a Jewish student on campus. 3. Stand Up to Antisemitism on Campus:?JGO is the first contact for grad students when they’re confronted with antisemitism on campus. They are dealing with school administrations to advocate for their students and support them through some really difficult situations. ? Short video about JGO here: https://lnkd.in/gmvJBshX ? If JGO’s work resonates with you, I hope you will consider supporting them to meet the needs of Jewish grad students across North America. Best of all, with their current matching campaign, every dollar you give is matched 3X, quadrupling your impact! Here is the link to contribute: https://lnkd.in/gzq36jB5 ? Thanks in advance for your support. And if you’d like to meet with someone on the amazing JGO team to learn more, I’m happy to make an introduction!

I hope today's newsletter can be the start of an ongoing conversation about how athletic departments can better reach out to new fans, especially Latinos. Producing broadcasts in Spanish (or Portuguese) can be expensive and very complicated, but that doesn't have to be the only way schools can try to build bridges with their communities. The best way to do it will look different from market to market...and I hope this newsletter helps explain that a bit.
?? Enjoyed this one from Matt Brown this morning on how some schools are engaging Latino fans at the stadium, over the air, and elsewhere. https://lnkd.in/ePmmVZU4

Three straight! The 2024 fall season marked the third consecutive year that Pop Warner has seen growth in youth athlete participation. Not only have we continued to stem a long slide, but the organization is well-positioned to continue growth in 2025 and beyond. “We must get better before we get bigger" - a popular quote by Truett Cathy - has marked my 3+ years with the national office. We've gotten better as we've gotten bigger (and we'll bigger because we're better): ?? Brand Building: With several marketing reels, PSAs and more, we elevated how we told the story of Pop Warner. ?? Member-Oriented Mindset: We emphasized the "member" part of leagues and associations and have begun fostering a more service-based approach. ?? Know People: We've revamped how we receive, retain and track member information to be more engaging, build meaningful relationships and gain better access with the people we serve. ?? Listening to Hear: Beyond better communication, we engaged our members to understand them - community advisory boards, surveys, meeting attendance - and did our best to respond in ways they'd feel heard. ?? Rules & Governance: Our rules and governance underwent significant revisions to appeal to potential leagues and associations more effectively and complement local high school programs. ?? Streamlined Processes: By leveraging digital tools, we reduced the workload for our grassroots volunteers; this led to a notable increase in adoption. ?? Cheer w/o Football: We became more open to including cheer & dance programs that were not directly aligned to a football program. ?? Talk Progress: If we do the above items well, it will show up in our participation and membership. So we track numbers and celebrate successes along the way. Here's to an exciting 2025!

What does belonging look, sound, and feel like for you in your school, work, or community? This week, we asked Avery, a member of our National Teen Board, to share her thoughts on belonging. Here’s what she had to say! Avery’s experience highlights how belonging comes from sharing what you love and feeling accepted for it. Whether it’s music, hobbies, or other passions, creating space for students to express themselves freely can deepen connections and build a more inclusive environment. Tip for Educators: Create moments where students can share their favorite music, interests, or cultures. Encouraging this exchange can build stronger relationships and foster belonging in your classroom. When children play, the world wins. Today marks the inaugural #InternationalDayOfPlay— a day we can all make play a priority for children around the world. The International Day of Play creates a unifying moment to elevate the importance of play as central to children’s learning and well-being — ensuring time to play, space to play, and support for quality play is prioritized. To make this change, we must: INVEST in children’s well-being by protecting their right to play. PROVIDE children with more time and opportunities to play, including in school. PROTECT their right to play by creating safe and accessible places to play, including those with special needs. RESPECT their rights to be heard in decisions impacting their right to play. SUPPORT them in developing social skills through play. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/dWMxentj
