Excited to Wrap Up My Journey with BLCK VC's Breaking into Venture Program! I'm thrilled to share a wrap-up of my incredible experience with the Breaking into Venture (BiV) Program at BLCK VC—a nine-week journey designed to support early-career Black professionals entering the venture capital field. Throughout the program, I engaged in insightful sessions, meaningful interactions with seasoned investors, and hands-on projects that deepened my understanding of the VC landscape. ?? Program Highlights: ??Understanding VC as a Business: Explored the VC business model and the importance of conviction and a founder-focused thesis. ??Firm Dynamics and Board Strategy: Learned how boards support portfolio companies and evolve over time. ??Developing an Investment Thesis: Crafted my "Midwest Hypothesis," highlighting the potential of Midwest-based ventures. ??Deal Flow and Sourcing: Recognized how personal alignment with founders' visions drives investment decisions. ??Due Diligence: Delved into assessing market fit, founder credibility, and fundamental analysis. ??Valuation and Deal Structuring: Gained insights into quantitatively assessing startups and building high-performing funds with sustainable strategies. ??Portfolio Management: Understood the importance of creating well-balanced portfolios and actively supporting founders. ??Career in Venture Capital: Received advice on staying active in the VC space while recruiting. ?? One of my favorite actors, Queen Latifah, once said that "We are the things we can't let go of and that wont let go of us." Those of you who know me pretty well know that this year has been quite a whirlwind, filled with people, places, and experiences that have been unforgettable. In short, it has been full of things that have taken hold of me, things that I can't (and won't) let go of. It is because of this that I want to speak more about a particularly gripping experience I have just begun, which is why I want to announce that I have recently joined this year's cohort of the Included VC Fellowship. Although at face value this may sound like just another VC fellowship, I can assure you it is unlike any other. It is a global program full of brilliant minds from across 35 countries and 48 nationalities, one that is creating a new generation of investors and leaders in venture capitol. It is a place where the next generation of diverse leaders in venture capital are able to talk and learn from some of the best minds at the most noted firms in venture capital, like Mouro Capital, HSBC Ventures, Notion Capital, and so many others. It is, in short, nothing less than one the places where the future of venture capital is being made. Being in this fascinating milieu has not only helped me grow intellectually and personally, but has also left me with some wonderful memories that I will look back with fondness to for years to come. A few in particular come to mind: My early morning work sessions for my first capstone project with my fellow cohort members Nat and Ella, who were such a joy and pleasure to work with! The session we had as a group with Adizah, who told us her own story about getting into investing and gave us valuable insights for our own journey into venture capital. Aside from these moments, I also want to thank the leader of Included VC, Nikita, for her relentless dedication to everyone in the fellowship and her tireless work to keep the whole fellowship running smoothly. Most importantly, I want to express my gratitude for her generosity of spirit and time that truly makes Included VC the best fellowship in venture capital today. As this year gives way to the new year, I am looking forward to growing and learning in the fellowship with all the incredible people in this cohort as we make our way into the wonderful world of venture capital. #BeIncluded #VentureCapital
