I love a collaborative piece and this one from Rohan Kelkar and Jana Gerber does not disappoint. I've been learning a lot recently about the potential that DERs and microgrids offer as we plan for the needs of the grid today and the future grid of tomorrow. This article has some great insights.
Thanks pv magazine USA for the recent coverage of a crucial topic. The grid continues to be stretched to its limit requiring innovative thinking, in an era of an insatiable appetite for data that's driving energy consumption to an all-time high. Always a pleasure to collaborate with Jana Gerber on her mission to build a more decarbonized and digital world. It was so much fun to be part of the Energy Round Table alongside Jeff Pearson, Anuradha Ramachandran, Waqar Syed and Michael Ireland to talk about Energy Innovations. I shared why I see so few post-combustion (point-source) #carboncapture technology #innovators trying to disrupt this space compared to those tackling #electric approaches and carbon removals (#CDR) to #decarbonize industry.

??? Why Awareness of Clockspeeds Matters in Green Transition The green transition is urgent, yet industries face a critical challenge: innovation in energy utilities is slowed by mismatches in "clockspeeds"—the varying rates of change within the energy ecosystem. In our newly published article https://lnkd.in/dwMAnsJT, we explore this challenge through a case study of a distribution system operator (DSO), uncovering how these differing rates of change hinder shared understanding and, ultimately, innovation. Key findings: 1?? Clockspeed Dynamics: We detail how the interplay of multiple clockspeeds shapes innovation processes. 2?? Shared Understanding: Clashing clockspeeds disrupt the shared understanding needed for effective coordination. 3?? Green Transition Impact: These dynamics significantly slow down the innovation necessary for the energy transition. ?? Let’s work together to bridge these gaps and accelerate the green transition. This work has been done with Professor Philip Cash from Northumbria University?and Professor Melanie Kreye from the University of York #GreenTransition #Innovation #Clockspeeds #dgfn #Ambidexterity

The Just Energy Transition must place communities at its core, especially those impacted by the shift from traditional industries like coal. #Digital technologies, such as smart grids and data platforms like the GeoHub, offer real-time insights into energy access and spatial inequalities. Tools like the Clean Electricity Equity Index (CEEI) guide policymakers in addressing energy justice by pinpointing opportunities in the just energy transition. Meanwhile, digital platforms enable collaborative planning, giving communities a voice in repurposing former coal sites and shaping future investments. Cement. Steel. And biogenic CDR - that's why we need carbon capture. FrostCC is half the cost of capture than amine-based systems: robust, thermo-mechanical capture cycle (versus thermo-chemical). Watch this space for commercial partner in biogenic sector. "Carbon America novel cryogenic carbon capture technology, FrostCC?, successfully completed 1,000 hours of testing at the National Carbon Capture Center (NCCC). FrostCC? is a cryogenic PSCC system that removes CO2 from flue gas before it is released into the atmosphere. It does this by cooling the flue gas below the sublimation temperature of CO2 , causing it to “frost” as dry ice and physically separate from the gas mixture. This solid CO2 is periodically melted and collected as a liquid, making it ready for compression and transportation to storage sites. FrostCC? does all of this without the use of water or chemicals and runs exclusively on electricity. During its testing at NCCC, FrostCC? successfully demonstrated its ability to capture CO2 and co-pollutants from flue gas and further validated the process and models for design. The next step in development for FrostCC? will be a demonstration of its full-scale commercial product."
