Today, I honor, recognize, and thank our nation’s veterans, who, with courage, selflessness, and determination, have fought to preserve our freedoms and make the world a better place. Like in every aspect of the US, Latinos- in particular- have also left an indelible mark on our country’s history through their military service. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, as of 2023, Hispanic or Latino veterans constituted 8% of the total U.S. veteran population which is equivalent to approximately 1.5 million individuals. This reflects an important 25% increase from 1.2 million in 2008. Projections indicate that the proportion of Hispanic veterans will continue to rise, reaching 13.7% of the total veteran population by 2040. The Library of Congress collection, “Hispanics in Service,” features personal narratives and photographs of many of these Hispanic veterans. This important work offers striking images and poignant stories that highlight how, whatever their background of heritage, US Hispanics have always found opportunities without impediments to honorably carry the uniforms of the Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marines, protecting our nation, defending our values and shaping our future. 82 years ago, the country’s first African-American Marines were recruited at Camp Montford Point in Jacksonville, NC. The City of Jacksonville celebrated their bravery at en event honoring the legacy of the Marines as well as nine of the original Montford Point United States Marine Corps. Why is this important? Some really great thoughts on #Allyship from Carmen Leishman on behalf of the Veterans Workstream of the Diversity Project - Investment Industry. One point that particularly resonated with me "[veterans] will quickly demonstrate....how integral they can be to your bottom line and how integral they can be to your business". In my experience, whilst those leaving the military may not have experience of the investment management industry, their skillset and training allow them to integrate and add value far quicker than many expect. Allyship means giving veterans the opportunity and time to demonstrate these skills, that will ultimately benefit the businesses in which they work and the industry as a whole.
