"Why the astronaut logo + space theme?" They symbolise adventure, courage, innovation – what our clients are all about. 3 of our values in business are: (1) Compassion (here to help others and improve the world – not profiteer) (2) Courage (support courageous people who take risks when they could just have a comfortable office job) (3) Creativity (human ingenuity is amazing, we celebrate and enable it with legal and business advice) I have those core values (and others) in common to varying degrees with clients, business partners, and people I work with generally. They are foundational and pivotal, and at the heart of New and Ingenuity. What are yours? Do you have a symbolic logo or theme? Have a good one! Ian

Artwork by On Kawara “Moon Landing” on view at the Glenstone Museum Never underestimate the power of human ingenuity. 55 years ago today the Apollo 11 landed on the moon. Taking a shot at the moon was driven by a fear that adversaries would use space as a tactical vantage point to monitor and attack the US and US interests. The unintended consequence of this was an exponential surge in innovation driven by men and women who challenged every conceivable known and extended the event horizon of mankind as a result. The race to the moon birthed a new creativity and focus on design that impacted the entire cycle of life for humans by developing products that could be used in labor and delivery wards, food packaging, farming, transportation, energy, conservation, communications, and even diplomacy. It stands as one of the greatest unifying moments in the history of humankind. When you are faced with great uncertainty and driven by fear, don’t assume the only outcome is destruction. Fear and uncertainty are powerful energies - the very kind needed to change the status quo and expand the natural boundaries of your comfort zone. #moon #apollo #apollo11 #moonshot #moonlanding #technology #create #creativity #design #nolimits #staythecourse #art #visualart #glenstonemuseum #innovation #space #1969 #ingenuity

Bridging Space and Culture — making Space for all. Industry pioneers like NASA and SpaceX, have propelled Space innovation forward, but it often feels out of reach for everyday people. That’s where we come in. With the backing of SpaceWERX's $500M innovation fund, the Disruptive Technology Index (D.T.I) and The Bridge are on a mission to change how the world engages with Space—fast-tracking tech companies to get Space-ready in just 15-17 months, while making sure Space isn’t just about rockets and research, but culture, creativity, and connection. When D.T.I brought JM onboard, our challenge was clear: create a brand that invites everyone into the conversation. A brand that doesn't just celebrate milestones in Space exploration, but makes Space Culture feel tangible, merging tech with street culture, science with style, and ideas with real-world impact. The result? A unified identity that brings the D.T.I brand ecosystem (their physical space, The Bridge, their incubator, I.2.A, and their conceptual media sub-brand, 3.2.1), under one bold vision. We didn’t just design a brand—we built a bridge. Our AI-driven visual library redefines Space aesthetics, blending cutting-edge tech with a fresh, editorial feel that breaks stereotypes and ushers in a new era of Space Culture. Check out our case study to see how we're reimagining Space for a new generation and why this project is already a 3x AGDA Award nominee for branding, digital, and motion. ?? https://lnkd.in/gT9ADRaw

Another great #AskPixoomaAnything question from 'Pixooma Day'. A BIG thank you to Sarah German who asked: "Where do you start when you create a magazine? Is it a redesign? Or an upgrade to existing communications? Or something else?" Most often it's is an entirely new project as per the Europlanet Magazine (https://lnkd.in/edii29Az) that we created for Anita Heward. She knew the organisation would benefit from a magazine that could demonstrate what the many members of the planetary science community, scattered across Europe, were doing in the field of planetary science. The problem was they'd never created a magazine before. Another example: Paul Green and Business Bulletin (see case study on this page: https://lnkd.in/emw8NJBy). He wanted to create a truly educational, editorially-focussed magazine but didn't know where to start. And for VPK Packaging UK and Ireland, they needed a staff newsletter to help communicate effectively with their staff across their various UK sites. For all these projects we started with reviewing the other marketing materials they'd produced recently, as often this helps demonstrate understand how they have been applying their brand. In most cases they have an idea for a name (or a shortlist of names) for the magazine which we can design a masthead for, and through discussions with them we are able to work out the various types of content that could be expected in future editions. We use this information to create a bespoke design that's clearly on-brand with? a consistent style and a grid layout that is flexible. Using this we create a number of concept pages using ‘dummy’, placeholder copy and images, unless they have something already that could be used. Although designing from scratch is the norm, it’s entirely possible to update and improve an existing design that has perhaps been created by a member of the internal team. This is because the thing that is most often misunderstood by most non-designers is good use of space. Simply applying a bit more space to the margins, the gutters between columns, the space between paragraphs etc all works wonders. We can then look at the layout of previous issues in detail. If they are all completely different and wide-ranging in style we can suggest ways to introduce more consistency. If they are all very formulaic and identical in layout from issue to issue, we can help them to introduce a bit of variation without losing the consistency. It’s always a balancing act between those two seemingly competing aims. Hopefully that answers your question, and you may find these links to related content useful as well: https://lnkd.in/eK-2Tf9K https://lnkd.in/ePf8D5pf https://lnkd.in/ej-puRVV

It has become somewhat of a ritual for me to post a year in review for Space Forge. And what a year it has been. I defined 2023 as a year of resilience and resurgence. For 2024 I had to move to a different language to find a word that resounded. "Kintsugi" translating (roughly) from Japanese to mean 'joining with gold'. It is used as a method to repair broken ceramics with gold powder. As such, each piece repaired using kintsugi tells its own unique story. It also invariably leads to some more beautiful pieces than they were before. The reason such a word resounds with me this year is because sometimes you have to break things to make them better. I will be very quick to say here that I am not talking about satellite manufacturing - though more gold on satellites would add a touch of glamour over and above MLI. But more as a journey of growth for Space Forge this year. We surpassed 50 people in 2024. Growing from 50 to 60 was more challenging than growing from 2 to 50. Processes and ways of working we installed at 6 or 7 people were no longer fit for purpose. Getting the whole company in the same location for a single hour proved Herculean in the task. Even orchestrating car park logistics during build phases while sandwich runs are made look like the latest space opera. So, we had to break things to make them better. The company Andrew Bacon and I are building is growing up. We are now a bigger organisation than the one I joined was when I entered this industry. Like a fine wine, or excellent cheese - Space Forge is getting better with age. Our maturity is seen with Michelle Flemming's incredible efforts over at Space Forge Inc - building partnerships with Voyager Space and Sierra Space (with many more to come). Amongst a whole raft of announcements we've preserved to hit the ground running in 2025. When we started Space Forge, Andrew and I agreed that if nothing else, we'd probably improved our employability. Whether or not we'd ever want to be employed again like our old ways is up for debate the longer we are on this journey. We've had major milestones this year kept deliciously under wraps for now. In our early days, investors struggled with the complexity of our technology - and my own ability to bring together a narrative as to how it all wove together and created a generational company. Why were we building semiconductor technologies on Earth and in Space? Why were we also building spacecraft, re-entry capabilities and the sub-systems associated with all of that? This year, by breaking things and repairing them with gold, we've found the needle and thread to weave that story together. It's fitting then, that the best way we've yet found to tell that story should be a Japanese export. H/T to Neil Monteiro for this, as I leave you with a video best summing up how when you build something better it's greater than the sum of its parts.

?????????????? ????????????????, ???????????? ????????????????, ???????????????????????????? & ??????????: ?????????????????????? ???? ?? ?????????????????????????? ???????????? Attending the "???????????? ?????? ???????????????????????????? ???? ??????????????????????????" workshop made me reflect on how Design Thinking, sustainability, and system thinking can address the emerging challenges in the space sector. A great example is N?va Space work on human-centric spacesuits, designed to adapt to the extreme conditions of space while focusing on the human experience. It's a perfect combination of technological innovation and sustainability. ?? During the ?????????? ?????? ???????????????????? - ?????????? ?????? panel, I had the pleasure of attending a thought-provoking discussion with Nima J. Shahinian from N?va Space and Kristin Haram F?rde, where we explored the definition of astronaut. Is it only someone who has crossed the Kármán line? A professional selected after years of training? Or is it a space tourist? As commercial space travel and tourism expand, the legal definition of "astronaut" holds significant implications for liability, safety, and policies. ?? This conversation made me realize how Design Thinking can help solve not only design challenges but also legal ones. How can we create solutions that are both innovative and compliant with existing regulations? In the rapidly advancing space industry, it's crucial to also consider the legislative impact. ?? The lack of this integrated approach could lead to higher Life Cycle Costs (LCC) and inefficiencies over time, as often happens when the right questions aren't asked from the very beginning. Space is not just for astronauts. It's a place where the contributions of professionals from various sectors—designers, lawyers, engineers—are key to building a collaborative, innovative, and sustainable ecosystem. ???? I want to thank TMC Italia | Technology and engineering services for the opportunity to participate in such inspiring events, where future challenges are tackled with a multidisciplinary perspective. ?? #SpaceInnovation #DesignThinking #Sustainability #SpaceLaw #SystemThinking #Innovation #ThankYouTMC
