Safety and social connection are as much a human need as air. For some survivors of humanity’s violent dark side, when real safety is withheld by social or economic factors beyond a survivors control like violence or poverty, our inbuilt survival instinct is triggered and social isolation can become an inescapable reality that creates tremendous misery, illness and disability while it kills us slowly. The point is to not blame the victim for responding how humans are designed to respond to danger, it is to understand that we have a system that deprives some people of safety and connection beyond their control in ways that can cause disabling harm and premature death. Trauma is an emergency even if nobody cares. It doesn’t just impact the survivor, it comes with a myriad of high costs to society even if nobody understands how. Our society is literally dying of mass ignorance and the abuse of power. The average citizen contributes to this decline by failing to educate themselves and doing nothing but complain about the people around them while assigning blame angrily and almost always incorrectly. Our ability to learn, our common humanity and love are our greatest strengths. I pray we collectively embrace it before it’s too late. In Solidarity ?????????
