Military Special Operation Family Collaborative’s (MSOFC) founding work revealed concerning challenges impacting America’s warfighting families. A mere 13% of families from Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marine Corps special operations units felt their basic needs were met, while only 18% of spouses felt able to pursue personal goals. Alarmingly, service members were delaying essential healthcare for an average of 13+ years. The intensity of service in special ops resonates profoundly throughout the entire SOF family. MSOFC raises awareness to SOF pitfalls and emphasizes the development of healthy foundations that can fortify special operations families. Our programs foster awareness, teach SOF families to identify signs of stress, and take proactive measures to establish healthy checkpoints and flourish. Just as our Green Berets prepare for the next conflict, so must the Special Forces’ support community; a community led by the non-profit sector. Leading the effort is the Green Beret Foundation, who’s focused on bringing the SOF community together to exponentially increase the effects of donor support. Charles Iacono, MBA is the President and CEO of Green Beret Foundation. He joined me from the highlight event of 2024, the Stars and Stripes Classic; an epic lacrosse battle between Green Berets and Navy SEALS. Charlie shared his vision for the foundation, where it’s come from, the impact it’s made on Green Berets of every generation and how 2025 is set to become the most important year in its history as it increases investment in programs supporting the careers and health of transitioning operators. Leading non-profit organizations is hard. Leading one that lives up to the standard of the Green Beret is even harder. Forces in Mind Trust has commissioned QinetiQ and RAND to undertake a study to explore the transition from military to civilian life. The research will help to further understand what the transition process looks like today. It is intended that the outputs from the study will be used to inform the planning, development and delivery of services in the charitable sector and within local and central government.
