It was so much fun to visit Charlene Zietsma's "Entrepreneurship and Innovation for Sustainability" class today. I chatted with the students about my experiences as a #sustainability "intrapreneur" (I love this term!) at two large but very different companies: Boston Consulting Group (BCG) (where I helped start the #GreenTeam) and DTE Energy. I shared 3?? best practices that I believe help individuals and organizations innovate for sustainability: ?? A senior-level executive champion: a mentor and someone on your side who really knows how to navigate the organization ?? Rock-solid analysis: there's no getting around this one. Ask your critics to poke holes in your work, and it'll be stronger for it. Sustainability work is rife with uncertainties; use scenario analysis to demonstrate the range of possibilities ?? Trusted insider noisemakers: these folks are essential complements to outside agitators. Trust is earned. Those who have it, must use it and make noise for the cause! ?? Sustainability Innovator's Dilemma. This is what I call the state I found myself in. Let me elaborate on what I mean by that. ?? My professional passion is sustainability. I find purpose in creating value, creating meaningful and positive long-term impact. And it is important for me to spend my time on something that aligns with my values. ?? For many years, I have been studying and working in sectors of the sustainability field, directly or indirectly, as an expert. I have been focusing on finding and highlighting different global and local sustainability issues, solving them by social movements, state and EU regulations, awareness raising. Thinking horizontal and cross-sectoral. That is how many experts in this field operate, I think so. ?? Almost two years ago, I found myself in the startup environment and began to learn a totally different approach to problem-solving - creating solutions to problems as businesses. I was and still am so excited about the scope achievable by this approach. But it is a new and different mindset for me - a vertical one. And I must say - I'm still not that good at it. ?? First of all, I struggle to focus on only one problem. Sustainability is such a complex concept, it has so many fields with huge development potential - circular economy, waste management, alternative energy resources, agriculture, mobility, process improvement, you name it. In the startup community, I've heard many times that you shouldn't fall in love with the solution - fall in love with the problem. But what to do when you love too many problems? ?? ?? Secondly, my horizontal, cross-sectional mindset disables my ability to focus on that one Persona, that one ideal client with its pains. I always end up thinking too wide, in too large scale. Last autumn I heard of a concept of superclient Earth. ?? I think this is where I operate - in the superclient Earth level, always concentrating on what would be sustainable in general. Coming up with great ideas, but not being able to name clients who would be willing to pay for them. That's the sustainability innovator's dilemma - thinking too global, too horizontal, too wide. ??
