As a charity auctioneer, my role goes far beyond just running the live auction ???? Fundraising is a team effort, and I believe it's crucial for the auctioneer to get involved in every aspect of the event—from selling raffle tickets ??? to hyping up the silent auction ???. Why? Because every penny counts ??, and it's our job to create an atmosphere of generosity that flows through every part of the evening. If I can help squeeze a few more bids on the silent auction or encourage someone to buy just one more raffle ticket, that extra effort can make all the difference in hitting the charity's fundraising goals. I’m also a firm believer that the fundraising doesn’t stop when the live auction ends! I keep going right up until the moment I leave the venue ??. Whether it's pushing that final donation or reminding people of the good cause on their way out the door, it’s all about maximising the impact of the event. I even managed to sell a TukTuk to the 360 Video guys who took this video, just before I was about to leave. Being a charity auctioneer isn’t just about selling items. It’s about driving a mission. One of the most important moments in a charity auction is right at the very start! ?? As an auctioneer, my top priority is to get everyone’s attention before the bidding begins, especially in long rooms where guests can easily be distracted by conversations or the distance from the stage. ?? Sometimes, you’ve got to get creative to make sure everyone’s focused. I’m not afraid to do whatever it takes to grab attention—even if it means standing on a chair in the middle of the room with a wireless mic! Why? Because once you have the whole room engaged, you set the tone for the auction and keep the energy high throughout. ?? From experience, I know that when everyone is tuned in and having fun from the get-go, the bids start rolling in and the funds for the cause skyrocket! ?? So, whether it’s by moving into the center of the action, or even climbing onto a chair —I’ll do whatever it takes to make sure the crowd is with me! ?? Hosting a silent auction can be an exciting way to raise funds, but organizing it can get complicated. A well-organized template in Google Sheets can make the process much easier. What Is a Silent Auction? In a silent auction, items are displayed, and instead of someone announcing bids, participants write down their offers quietly. Each item has a bid sheet where people can place their bids without anyone knowing who they are competing with. The person with the highest bid when the auction ends wins the item. Silent auctions are often used at charity events, school fundraisers, and other gatherings where the goal is to raise money. This format creates a fun, competitive atmosphere, encouraging more people to join in and increasing the chances of raising funds. Step 1: Open Google Sheets Go to Google Sheets. Once you’re in, click the ‘+Blank’ to open a new spreadsheet. Laughter, excitement, and even a bit of silliness can transform the energy in the room—and that energy translates into generosity. ???? One of my favourite moments is when I get the audience involved, whether it’s a round of applause, a cheer, or even something as simple (and wonderfully silly) as an enthusiastic “ooooo” as I hype up an auction lot. ?? That shared, playful spirit makes the whole room feel connected—and people give more when they’re smiling and engaged! ??? I truly believe that fundraising events shouldn’t feel like work. They should feel like a celebration—of the cause, of the people supporting it, and of the difference we’re making together. ??
