ARTICLE OF THE WEEK | “Recovery of the Real Fábrica de Pa?os de Brihuega, Guadalajara” by Juan de Dios de la Hoz Martínez “The most appropriate methodology for intervening in this type of historical projects is always based on a prior exhaustive process of historical research, followed by field work necessary to draw up the planimetric survey and the pathological study. The main goal of this restoration was to bring back the identity of the building and to recover the rich spaces that had disappeared under the rubble. Thus, the work carried out was based on reconstruction and not on demolition, on the use of the same constructive systems and traditional materials found in the buildings, and on the integration of the archeological remains that appeared during the works, since they are also part of the history of the building.” Read the article: https://lnkd.in/dv_hs-KC #traditionalbuilding #traditionalarchitecture #buildingtrades #heritage #heritagepreservation #restoration Juan de Dios de la Hoz Martinez

It is extremely difficult to renovate/update a building or home in historic or conservation district and you can forget about building something new. Creating more of these districts guarantees a tax base too small to pay for a growing city's need. The buildings that we should be protecting are those that are eligible for the National Register (criteria below): Age and Integrity: Must be at least 50 years old and retain original features showing its historical significance. Significance: Needs to be significantly linked to American history, architecture, archeology, engineering, or culture in ways such as: ? Tied to important historical events. ? Connected to significant people. ? A great example of a type of construction, architecture, or the work of a master. ? Can provide important historical or prehistorical information. Exceptions: Properties that normally wouldn’t qualify but are exceptionally significant can be eligible. Exclusions: Generally, certain properties like cemeteries, birthplaces, and religious buildings aren’t eligible unless they have exceptional importance.

Throwback Thursday ??? No two days are ever quite the same for the Champion Groundworks team, so we're always prepared for the surprises that may be lurking within our projects. Some surprises though, you simply can't prepare for... Back in early 2022 when our team were hard at work laying the infrastructure on-site in Sherford, one of our plant operators uncovered a surprise of epic proportions. An Ice Age cave complete with the remains of a woolly mammoth, woolly rhinoceros along with a virtually complete wolf skeleton and the partial remains of a hyena, horse, reindeer, mountain hare and red fox. The remains are thought to date to the last Ice Age - about 30,000 to 60,000 years ago. The lead archaeologist on the project, Rob Bourn said the finds were of "national significance" and added that it was "a once-in-a-lifetime experience for those involved". The Sherford Consortium, leading the development of the residential site said at the time "Construction happening at Sherford is the sole reason these findings have been discovered and it is remarkable that they have laid undisturbed until now. To find such an array of artefacts untouched for so long is a rare and special occurrence." Sadly, the cave itself was too unsafe to be opened to the public but the cave was conserved and no construction has taken place on top of it. Additionally, following the archaeological investigation, much of the contents of the cave were removed so that they could be analysed, and displayed - giving everyone a rare insight into our local history. #championgroundworks #champion #historicalfind #sherford #excavators #excavator #excavation #excavationuk #groundworks #groundworksuk #groundworkers #groundworkersuk #suprises #historicalsignificance

Kleanza has sent an open letter to each Member of the Legislation Assembly in BC, as we believe the permitting and licensing system within the Heritage Conservation Act is in crisis. We have also set this up as a petition. PLEASE SIGN AND SHARE!??(Thank-you!) Here is an excerpt: “Permit review and issuance is taking too long: ten months to a year or more. These excessive timelines are a significant impediment to development, housing, infrastructure, and our economy. The delays are also having a negative impact on First Nations heritage preservation, the government’s commitments to the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP) and Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (DRIPA). In parallel with the permitting crisis is a shortage of licensed professionals. Currently there are not enough to meet industry needs and this number is expected to decline while demand continues to grow. The current qualification requirements and review process for licensing archaeologists is restricting much needed growth. Learn from solutions working successfully in other provinces. Solutions are readily available to correct the situation. We ask MLAs to help improve the current permitting and licensing system for the benefit of all British Columbians. We ask MLAs to take a critical look at these issues and implement solutions in real time. Improvements to the archaeological permitting system in BC are needed immediately.” https://lnkd.in/gnRtvqpH

Contours: Contours refer to the lines that trace the elevation changes of a land surface, mapping the varying heights across a landscape. Originating from early topographic studies, the concept of contours has been crucial in understanding and managing land features. ?? Sutton Hoo’s Wooden Ship is Being Reconstructed Plank-by-Plank! ?? archaeologists and boatbuilders are reconstructing the legendary Sutton Hoo ship, one of the most significant Saxon vessels ever discovered. This ambitious project aims to have the boat seaworthy by 2026. ?? What You Need to Know: 1?? Historical Significance: The Sutton Hoo burial site, discovered in 1939, revealed an 88.6-foot-long ship that served as King Raedwald of the East Angles' burial vessel. Timber Sourcing: The reconstruction team actively seeks native timbers, precisely long clear runs of oak and curved timbers for framing. To support sustainability, they've planted 400 oak saplings and 1,600 other native species to replenish the resources used. 3?? Community Effort: The project brings together a dedicated team, including a master shipwright, volunteers, and researchers, all working collaboratively to ensure that traditional shipbuilding techniques are adhered to throughout the reconstruction. ?? This project highlights the importance of preserving cultural heritage and emphasises the need for sustainable construction practices. Support efforts that connect communities with their history and environment. ??
