People stay when they feel connected. When I got out of school, I worked for a company that didn’t instill a sense of belonging. A family member owned that company. Even though I was related to the owner, I never had a sense of belonging. His attitude toward me was, “I’m going to pick on you because I know you won’t quit. Keeping you in line will keep everyone else in line.” So, I became the scapegoat with a Master’s degree. I worked there for a few years and realized I definitely didn’t want to work in that kind of environment. I learned over time that if you build an organization where people feel connected, trusted, and valued, they will stay. If you build an organization where people don’t feel like that, they will leave. The only people who will stay are those who feel they have no other choice. They don’t have any opportunity to go anywhere else. Ending up with a company full of people who are only there because they can’t find other work isn’t going to be overly productive or positive. Does that make sense?? Hit reply. I’d love to know. My excerpt from the book:? “People Come First The New Business Model”?

Strategy is choosing, therefore giving up something. There is no one-size-fits- all, for all the market. You can’t find worth nor relevance being everything for everyone. Watch the video by Alex M H Smith it’s definitely worth it. What other insights do you find in it?

This is maybe my favourite strategy of all time. Because: - It's fun - It's brave - It contains major sacrifice ...and it was done by a business most people would generally consider stale and unadventurous. This just goes to show that it's never too late, and *anyone* can create major change in their business - no matter how big, cumbersome, or entrenched. That is the power of commitment. Hope you enjoy. ___ If you like this, make sure you follow me, Alex M H Smith as I'll be dropping two of these vids every single week.

We’ve all been there. You feel lost, confused, or out of sync. Maybe your last business didn’t work out, or you’re still searching for what truly drives you. That’s where I am right now. I’ve always been my toughest critic, but I’ve learned it’s okay not to have everything figured out. We don’t always need to know what’s next. It’s hard to slow down and be present, but sometimes we need to pause and reassess. If you’re in the same spot, give yourself space to rethink your priorities. While “enjoy the journey” can feel cliché, there’s truth in it. It’s part of the process.

The power of “I GET to…” versus “I HAVE to….” Through different experiences and conversations with our clients, we sometimes hear the business owner say “I HAVE to deal with….” or “I HAVE to put up with….” and that’s a mindset we try to change! Yes, there are growing pains with running a successful company, a thriving & growing business. But isn’t that a privilege? Isn’t that what you wanted when you first started? By changing the mindset to “I GET to deal with this…. Because my company is growing & thriving” is a great way to help foster a great culture and keep momentum of your business! ???? #CoolHollowSolutions #BusinessConsulting #PersonalDevelopment

In the landscape of a corporate giant, where countless disciplines and processes converge, I have come to deeply respect the necessity of adhering to these systems. They are the backbone of any successful organisation, ensuring seamless operation and efficiency. Throughout my journey, I have gained invaluable insights and understanding. Navigating through this intricate framework has underscored the importance of these structures in maintaining our efficiency and achieving our goals. Yet, one of my most profound learnings has been the importance of not losing sight of our own individuality. With respect for established processes, it is crucial to preserve what makes each of us unique and to bring our distinct perspectives and creativity to the table. I firmly believe that no matter how structured or disciplined the work environment may be, we must always dare to dream boldly, to stand out, and to innovate with fearless creativity. Embrace the excitement of your journey. Never let that spark fade. Keep dreaming and striving to maintain your individuality. This journey has shown me that professional success and personal fulfillment go hand in hand. By daring to dream and innovate, we contribute to the success of the organisation while preserving our own unique identities.

Growth Happens in the Small Steps ?? Bold moves grab attention, but quiet consistency builds empires. Imagine this: Two companies are chasing growth. One burns bright and fast but fizzles out under pressure. The other? They show up every day, improving a little at a time, building trust and resilience. I’ll bet on the second one every time. Why? Because growth isn’t glamorous—it’s incremental. It’s the daily grind, the invisible work that no one applauds but everyone notices when it delivers results. How can you tap into the power of consistency? ?? Build systems that work for you. ?? Focus on steady, aligned messaging. ?? Prioritize long-term wins over immediate gratification. ?? Consistency isn’t flashy, but it works. How are you building momentum in your career or business? #BusinessGrowth #Trust #Sustainability

A company is not your family…… ? I see a lot of posts going around these days talking about the negative corporate cultures that can be created when organizations use the word “Family” to describe the type of environment they are looking to create.? ? The narrative seems to be that when you use the word "Family" instead of something like “Team,” you lose a sense of accountability and expectation. That poor performance and substandard deliverables become acceptable. That unconditional support is prioritized overachieving bottom-line goals.? ? While I 100% agree with the underlying points being made - Competitive companies need accountability and high standards around performance, quality and efficiency. ? But, as a family business owner, I still find that my defenses come up when I read these types of posts and the subsequent comments because I feel they created a negative connection between the words Family and Business - whether consciously or subconsciously. ? So friends, a question for you…..does the statement that “a company is not your family” impact your perception of family businesses???

How has this happened? Has your business always looked this way? Clearly defined roles have been muddied And nobody's sure what they're supposed to be doing, Or what they should leave in others' hands. Your way forward looks foggier than ever And you're running out of time. If you want to keep your business intact, Then you need to act right now. It's probably worth looking at your team's roles and exploring ways to redefine them. Find ways to simplify each person's tasks, Rather than breaking it into little pieces amongst everyone. It's not the most comfortable process And there's a chance you'll find people you don't need in the business, But ultimately it's about putting people in positions they'll enjoy Which will only improve your business results And make the path ahead more clear.
