How did I end up here? With a degree in education, you’d think I'd be in a classroom, but I’ve found my groove in sales development. I’ve been with Whistle for over 3 years now, and it’s been an amazing ride. So, was my 5-year journey to get an education degree a waste? Absolutely not, and here’s why. Despite the apparent differences between the roles of a school teacher and a sales professional, there are several common areas where skills and attributes overlap: ?? Communication Skills Both roles require excellent communication skills. Teachers need to clearly explain concepts to students of varying abilities and backgrounds, while sales professionals must articulate the benefits of their products or services to potential clients. ?? Interpersonal Skills Strong interpersonal skills are crucial in both fields. Teachers must build rapport with students, parents, and colleagues to foster a supportive learning environment. Similarly, sales professionals need to establish and maintain relationships with clients to facilitate successful business transactions. ?? Persuasion and Influence Teachers often use persuasive skills to motivate students and encourage positive behavior and engagement with learning material. Sales professionals similarly use persuasion to convince clients of the value of their offerings and to close deals. ?? Adaptability and Flexibility Both teachers and sales professionals must adapt their approaches based on the needs and responses of their audiences. Teachers adjust their instructional strategies to meet diverse learning needs, while sales professionals tailor their sales pitches to suit the specific interests and objections of each client. ?? Goal-Oriented Both professions are driven by goals—teachers aim to achieve educational objectives and improve student outcomes, while sales professionals focus on meeting or exceeding sales targets and expanding their customer base. These commonalities highlight that while the contexts and end goals of teaching and sales are different, the fundamental skills and approaches required can be quite similar. Well maybe not necessarily a degree… but with the sales landscape changing and expectations of reps increasing, formal training might be turning into a necessity. With more tools than ever—CRM platforms, dialers, prospecting tools, leveraging social media, brand development, cold and warm outreach approaches, and multilayered outreach strategies, the demands of being a sales professional today are no joke. It’s easy to see how many people believe every sales professional needs some formal training. That’s kind of funny when you think about, it since so many sales professionals find themselves in a sales career accidentally. But how much formal education really impacts job success is another story. This research from over a decade ago investigated that exact question. And surprisingly, they found sales reps with formal sales training significantly outperformed those without. Here’s why: Mastering Core Behaviors: These graduates came in with core skills like rapport building and presentation—skills that are harder to develop on the job but crucial for success. Commitment and Adaptability: Sales-trained graduates tended to demonstrate stronger commitment to their organizations, which also correlated with lower turnover rates. What makes a great sales rep? Well, that is a very long list. But, there is one thing that stands out - and can also apply to all employees. Someone who is a lifelong learner. One of the ways you can identify this trait is in how a rep seeks out new ideas, listens and asks questions in trainings, and takes on feedback with an open mind. Think less: “I’ve been doing this for a long time, I know what I’m doing” “That doesn’t apply to me” “I’ve always done it this way” And more: “Let’s think about ways we can do this even better?” “How could we take that information and apply it to our situation?” “How can I improve on this skill?” An open mind, seeking out growth opportunities, and having a positive relationship with feedback can chart that course to being a star seller. As Adam Grant says, learning comes from being eager to hear “you’re wrong” as much as you are eager to hear “you’re right.”

This week a professor from a university in Canada said to me, "You have a really good way of explaining your technology, Have you ever thought about moving into #teaching?". This got me thinking...Is there a relationship between teaching and #sales?! My thoughts are both roles rely on key overlapping #skills and approaches: #Communication Skills: - A good teacher knows how to communicate complex ideas clearly and in ways that are understandable for their audience. Similarly, a good salesperson must convey the value of a product or service in a way that resonates with the customer. Empathy: - Both teachers and salespeople need to understand the needs, concerns, and motivations of their audience. Teachers adjust their instruction based on how students are responding, just as salespeople adapt their pitch based on customer feedback. Listening Skills: - Good teachers listen to their students’ questions and struggles to provide targeted guidance. Salespeople also need to listen carefully to prospects to address their specific needs and concerns. Problem Solving: - Teachers solve problems by helping students understand material or overcome learning challenges. Similarly, salespeople identify and solve customer problems by offering tailored solutions. Relationship Building: - Both professions require building trust. A teacher gains the trust of students through consistency and showing that they care about the students' success. A salesperson builds trust with a client by demonstrating reliability and understanding their unique needs. Adaptability: - Teaching and sales both require adapting to different people, situations, and learning/selling environments. Flexibility and the ability to adjust approaches are crucial. Motivation and Engagement: - Teachers must motivate students to engage with the material. Salespeople need to engage prospects and motivate them to make a purchase decision. Both roles involve creating a sense of value and urgency around what’s being taught or sold. What is Sales? ?? Since the start of September, I’ve been thinking a lot about this question. One of the most successful consultants in the office asked me during my interview at ABC Teachers, and it really made me pause. ?? At the time, I had just transitioned from four years in banking and a year in education ??, where the things that brought me the most joy were connecting with people ?? and making a real difference in their lives ??. “Sales” didn’t exactly match up with that feeling of fulfillment. But the more I thought about it, the more I realized: sales, for me, isn’t about high-pressure tactics or quotas. It’s about connection. It’s about genuinely trying to make a positive impact on schools ??, teachers ????, support staff ??, and, ultimately, students ????. My role isn’t about a hard sell—it’s about people ??. That’s where true success and real satisfaction come from in recruitment. Sales is about offering a service that matters ??. In my case, it’s helping schools find the right staff and helping educators find their perfect role ??. It’s about creating stability for students ?? and seeing the positive ripple effects. Yes, 'sales' can be tough ??, but how you perceive it makes all the difference.
