For quite some time, there has been a belief that certain aspects of the Mental Health Act 1983 are no longer suitable for the current world. It is evident that the world has evolved significantly over the past 40 years, with shifting views, ideas, and perspectives. Therefore, it is encouraging to witness the government introducing a Bill to Parliament that aims to rectify many of these shortcomings. Of particular note is the inclusion of provisions specifically addressing the needs of individuals with learning disabilities and autism. This demonstrates a step in the right direction towards ensuring that all members of society are adequately supported and protected. This week,we outline the key points of the Bill, as well as providing information on alternative education options beyond public schools. Additionally, we delve into the introduction of a new code of conduct for Directors of companies and charity trustees, highlighting the importance of ethical leadership in these roles.

One of the best parts about doing what Yusuf Abdol Hamid and I do as filmmakers is the access that we are given to people from all walks of life and their stories. Here we present "The Long Journey Home" - the story of Aaron and his parents, Teck Hin and Lilian. Aaron has autism and is non-verbal, and his ageing parents are going through a major struggle finding a long-term adultcare home for their son. Adopting a cine-docu approach for this project, we kept things loose on set as we had to adapt to changes in Aaron’s mood. We also saw, firsthand, the emotions involved when parents feel helpless about their children’s future. This is the second piece in our ongoing collaboration with Happee Hearts Movement, which espouses a holistic approach towards healthcare for people with Intellectual Disability and their caregivers. Their model of care is patient-first, and focuses on their clients' and caregivers' quality of life and integration within the larger community and society. We are very inspired by what Dr Chen Shiling, Norman Koh, Caleb Goh and the entire team there are doing, and we are very honoured to be a small part of this. We are very grateful to Aaron and family for allowing us to come into their lives and for sharing their story, as well as all the organisations featured - Institute of Mental Health, St. Andrew's Autism Centre, who are all contributing towards this very important work. #autism #nonprofit #socialpurpose #intellectualdisabilities #filmmaking

FEEL GOOD FRIDAY- May is mental health awareness month Struggling with mental health and trying to find community resources to help with that struggle does NOT feel good. At all. Now add that to being a youth in today's world. Overwhelming is way too weak of a word to explain what that feels like.? Why does it all feel so hard? For starters, there is still major stigma around admitting you are struggling with your mental health, AND once you do admit you need help, there are very few quality resources that are accessible.? However, finding a resource that offers a bright light for youth who are dealing with mental health struggles, does in fact, FEEL GOOD.? It's a big haul to to admit you want and need help, and then find appropriate help that you can access long enough to feel the changes you want and hope to feel. It's a lot for anyone but now layer that on top of being a youth in today's culture. I'm here to tell you that most youth are struggling. CALM DOWN, I DIDN'T SAY ALL, I SAID MOST! If you don't think our youth are having a difficult time just ask any teacher, pediatrician, ER doc, nurse... to share their two cents and then sit back and listen to what they have to say.? Enter 5280 High School.? A project based learning high school creating bold, prepared, and balanced students all of who are dedicated to living life in recovery.? This high school serves students who struggle with substance abuse, self-harm, eating disorders, and other destructive behaviors. It's a small high school and the teachers and staff are deeply committed to helping youth thrive.? Next Friday, May 10th they will be having their first fundraising gala and I'm beyond honored to help them create an event that not only speaks to their mission, but raises money, because news flash, there isn't enough money in the education pot to fund schools in the manner they need to be funded.? UPDATE ON ADVOCATING FOR POLICIES FOR ORPHANS Before diving into the findings of my study, I'd like to share that my thesis explored the experiences of individuals who have lost one or both parents, focusing on how it has influenced them, the challenges they face, and how they cope. The experiences shared have been an emotional rollercoaster, as one participant expressed: “It’s not a place you want to be. It’s been a decade since I lost both my parents, but no one ever had a conversation with me about the changes that come with such a loss, or how to deal with it—until today. After the funeral, you're left to figure it out on your own.” All participants indicated that a major challenge was how the loss of a parent or both significantly impacted their academic pursuits and financial well-being. **Academic Impact:** Participants mentioned that they often had to drop out of school to allow their siblings to finish their education before they could return. Some expressed the embarrassment of having to switch schools from private to public after the loss of their father. Others shared how they had to stay home for extended periods after high school to work and support their family before being able to attend college or pursue a trade. Some also noted that their academic performance suffered due to the emotional toll of grief, making it difficult to focus. **Financial Impact:** Since parents are often the primary source of financial support, losing them means losing that stability. Many participants shared how they struggled financially and with meeting their basic needs after the loss of a parent. **A Call to Action:** Let’s prioritize policies that assist children of school-age who lose a parent. Additionally, advocating for schools to employ mental health counselors to support students coping with grief could make a significant difference. Let's all come to together to fight the stigma associated with seeking mental health support, seeking mental health support should be as normal as walking to the pharmacy. A question that was raised: “Why don’t these children go to orphanages if they struggle so much?” I asked the same question, and the responses were eye-opening. This is just one aspect of my research, and I look forward to sharing more findings in the future. #MentalHealth #MentalHealthSupport #Mentalhealthawareness

Understanding the impact of trauma allows us to create safe and supportive environments where individuals feel seen, heard, and valued. Children growing up in homes with parents who have substance use disorders (SUDs) face additional challenges during times when school is not in session, like summer vacations. Most kids and teens can’t wait for these breaks, but children growing up in homes impacted by the disease of addiction are very often isolated and afraid.
