Grateful for the opportunity to work with Child and Family Focus Inc. prevention education program to present Shattering Stigma: reframing the image of recovery at Swarthmore College supported by the Delaware County, Pennsylvania Department of Human Services, Office of Drug and Alcohol. Confronting the overt and covert stigmatization (discrimination) that people who use drugs and those in recovery face is critical to improving our response to this historic crisis and improve the lives of individuals, families, and communities impacted. The highlight of the event was hearing the lived and living experience of the panelists Kelli Murray CPSS, CRS, SUN, Carla Sofronski, and James Sherman as it relates to drug use and recovery stigma. Some areas we explored were: 1. Why its important to discuss drug use and recovery stigma 2. Personal experience with stigma — its impact on the individual, their families, and their recovery journey. 3. Impact of stigma on their view of self, hope, help seeking, and more. 4. Stigma in the healthcare and criminal legal systems. 5. Solutions to address stigma on the individual and systemic levels 6. Their courage to speak openly about their experience and the most effective ways they've found to share their message and change the narrative #pennsylvania #endoverdose #communityhealth #stigma #publichealth #publicsafety #recovery #harmreduction

Thank you to the Delaware County Department of Human Services, the Delaware County Office of Drug and Alcohol, and Swarthmore College for helping make this happen. This is great news: The National Plan to End Parkinson’s Act would bring key federal agency stakeholders together along with nonfederal experts, patients, and caregivers to build a national plan to prevent, treat, and cure Parkinson’s Disease, including atypical Parkinsonisms like progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP). Following the model of the?National Alzheimer’s Project Act, signed into law in 2011, which has spurred major advances in the development and funding of research for treatments and cures for Alzheimer’s and related dementias, it will hopefully improve early diagnosis of PD. #parkinsons #parkinsonsawareness
Breaking news: President Biden has signed the National Plan to End Parkinson’s Act! This newly enacted legislation requires the Secretary of Health and Human Services to carry out a plan to prevent, diagnose, treat, and cure Parkinson’s. It also requires the Secretary to form a diverse advisory council that will include people living with Parkinson’s, as well as care partners, researchers, and physicians. Thanks to all involved in this accomplishment, from individual advocates to our friends at The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research, Parkinson's Foundation, American Parkinson Disease Association, PMD Alliance (Parkinson & Movement Disorder Alliance), PD Avengers, and so many other organizations. And special thanks to the legislators who introduced the bill–Senators Capito and Murphy and Representatives Bilirakis and Tonko—the legislators who voted in favor of the bill, and President Biden for signing it into law! --- #parkinsons #parkinsonsawareness #parkinsonsdisease #NationalPlantoEndParkinsons #legislation #news

This article has some great insights into how modern medicine and medical research can better support at risk groups (the parties bringing forward the lawsuit and their motivations for doing so aside). The future of medical support needs to look at the complexity of the whole person. That certainly does not mean to disregard that certain groups will be more susceptible or at higher risk to certain disease than others. It just means that we can do a better job of treating the individual with more precise and individualistic care using better predictors and models of healthcare. "Medical research has sharpened a focus on economic, social and environmental factors that contribute to health, such as air pollution where patients live and whether they have access to healthy food. The AHA last year overhauled its heart-disease screening tool for patients... the tool now uses a patient’s age, some health measures and ZIP Code. Location shows whether patients live in neighborhoods with high poverty and unemployment." #data #complexity #helathcare
