Efforts to build a new bridge connecting Interstate 83 in Harrisburg with the West Shore and Cumberland County got a big boost after it was announced that Pennsylvania had secured $500 million in federal funding for the project. The $500 million investment will help cover the cost of an estimated $1.1 billion to $1.3 billion plan to replace the existing structure, which is 64 years old and deteriorating. State transportation officials say cracks in the structure may prompt weight restrictions, and the increasing need for repairs has prompted partial and full closures at times. Happy to see work progressing on our Bluefield Regional Pump Station! This station is vital to providing sewer service to lower Lexington County. In conjunction with this project, we have five other projects being completed simultaneously via separate contracts with three different engineering firms, including one project in partnership with a private developer. All six projects must all be completed prior to the opening of the new South Lake Elementary School in August. The Louisiana Bridge project, suffers costly design mistakes and settlement issues. Ground settlement issues have delayed the completion of the $171-million Belle Chasse Bridge in Louisiana, pushing the original April 2024 deadline to February 2025. The delays have resulted in $10,000-per-day fines for the developer. Inspections in late June revealed that the precast, pre-stressed concrete girder approaches for the bridge's two-lane northbound span had settled beyond design specifications, further complicating the project's progress. The full extent of the ground settlement and the corresponding repair strategy are still under evaluation. However, the current mitigation plan involves replacing the bridge approaches, which could take eight to ten weeks, depending on the approval of the remediation plan.
