The United States Marine Corps is revolutionizing the way Marines learn and instructors teach. They are saying goodbye to traditional PowerPoint lectures and embracing "outcomes-based" learning. The Marine Corps is launching Project Triumph, an initiative led by the Training and Education Command, to prioritize individual Marines' ability to learn and think critically. Instead of simply telling them what to think, they are teaching them how to think. The new approach focuses on creating mentally agile Marines who can solve problems and make decisions independently and efficiently. It involves smaller, more personalized learning settings and encourages self-guided learning. Marines are expected to study material before instruction and then collaborate with their peers to reinforce their knowledge. The Marine Corps recognizes the importance of adaptable instructors who can cater to the unique learning styles of each student. They are moving away from the passive lecture-style teaching method and adopting a learner-centric approach. Research shows that when learners actively participate in their own learning process, they retain information better and for a longer period. To support this transformation, the Marine Corps has created new military occupational specialties for exceptional instructors, ensuring that teaching quality remains high. This groundbreaking initiative, along with other initiatives like Project Trident and Project Tripoli, is reshaping how Marines train and equipping them with the skills they need in changing and challenging environments.

Did you know? America's first battlefield parks were created by the United States military as a training tool for officers. All officers destined to become general officers in the US must first undergo rigorous training at a "war college". This training is not physical, but mental in nature. The purpose of this training is to teach officers how to think like a general. Much of our modern curriculum has its roots in early 19th Century Prussia, where the idea of a "staff school" was born in the wake of their many defeats by Napoleon. They sought to systematize military instruction where before the only method had been hard-earned experience. This training had, in addition to classroom instruction, two practical exercises. The first, "Kriegsspiel" (German for "war game") was a map exercise designed to give officers experience of the "friction" faced by commanders on the battlefield. The second, in contrast to the first, emphasized the role of an officer *on the ground*. This was the "Staff Ride", where officers would quite literally ride around a field with instructors describing tactical problems based on the terrain. Quickly these staff rides moved to take place on historical battlefields, where instructors could draw upon historical teaching examples using the actual terrain involved. The United States adapted this model from the Prussians to inform its own War College curriculum. In the 1890s veterans groups lobbied the government to acquire land at the sites of five major Civil War battles in order to establish parks there: Gettysburg, Antietam, Vicksburg, Shiloh, and Chickamauga. The National Park Service did not exist, so the government tasked the War Department to acquire and interpret the land. The military took the opportunity to create training grounds for officers. They constructed roads, trails, and observation towers to help improve access to and visibility of the key terrain with the goal of facilitating world-class staff ride experiences. These roads and observation towers still remain key pieces of visitor architecture at these sites today. Gettysburg especially, with its proximity to the Army War College in Carlisle, PA, became a highly developed training tool for officers. Even now the army conducts a staff ride of the battlefield each year for all the students, analyzing the maneuvers, commanders, and decisions made during the battle. The Army quickly expanded the scope of their staff rides to include many other battlefields across the United States, most of which were not yet preserved as parks. The Army's efforts to understand these battles for training provides much of the scholarly basis for how we interpret these battlefields today. I've recently begun my own contribution to this wonderful tradition at Monocacy National Battlefield Park. As a research volunteer I am developing a staff rides guide to help rangers provide excellent staff rides to current and future generations of our armed forces.
