From liquiphilic to #superliquiphilic, or liquiphobic to #superliquiphobic surfaces – how to do that? ??What is hiding behind these Greek technical terms are #wetting properties, and the exact pathways to achieve extremely strong repulsion or wetting of surfaces by water or oils, respectively, attracted over 50 attendees to yesterdays’ Materials IQ workshop in Thun. Materials IQ is a workshop series run by the partners NTN Innovative Surfaces Association , Empa and the Hightech Zentrum Aargau AG with its materials- and nanotechnology platform nano.swiss. ?????The term ?liquiphobic? was first coined by Dr. Bharat Bhushan. In his keynote on ?Lessons from Nature? he showcased a landscape of examples of #bioinspired, mechanically durable and even self-healing superliquiphobic/-philic surfaces. The aim is to solve problems or enhance energy efficiency in mobility and energy technologies. Technically important applications include surfaces with anti-fouling, anti-fogging, anti-icing, oil-water separation, and self-cleaning properties. A common pattern developed in the high-level presentations of Markus Varga,??Patrik Hoffmann and Rainer Kling: While the chemical properties of a surface lay the foundation, advanced #structuring converts it to the next level. Mostly, these nano- and microstructures (which can even be hierarchical) are being applied by #laser technology – a technology that benefits from doubled power and thus, speed, every other year. ??The bottom line: Progress in understanding allows for the manufacturing of superliquiphobic or superliquiphilic technical surfaces via targeted large-area structurization, directly or via tools for their replication. Challenges remain to preserve these surfaces during extended operation times, yet we are getting closer to what nature has developed during billions of years. Silicon micropumps are a game-changer in various industrial and medical applications, with their ???????????????? ???????????? and ability to meet specific pressure and transported media requirements.
