Making matings with intent is a key sustainability intervention for both beef and dairy production systems. I had a great time speaking with Chip Kemp from IGS American Simmental Association about the role of hybrid beef genetics in a more profitable and sustainable supply chain. My section starts at 39:33 in the video link, but encourage you check out the interviews with Don Schiefelbein and Lane Giess as well. Our discussion centered around the role of hybrid genetics in a modern beef breeding program and the additive value of coming technologies that create the opportunity to transform beef genetic improvement. Title: St. Mary's River National Model Program: Scientific Research; Sustainable Nutrition Studio Guests: Robert (Bob) Parkinson, District Governor, Rotary International Rotary District #7630 "Future Vision" Project & President, King Oyster Farm, Lexington Park, MD Steven L. King, Chair, Rotary International District #7620 "Future Visions" Water Projects Christopher Puttock, Research Associate, Smithsonian Institution National Museum of Natural History (NMNH) ======================================================== Rotary International with its 1.3 million members believes world-wide change starts with a commitment to "Service above Self". In more than 34,000 clubs worldwide, members are volunteering in communities at home and abroad to supporting education and job training, providing clean water, combating hunger, improving health and sanitation, and eradicating polio, among thousands of local and international projects. Rotary clubs are open to people of all cultures and ethnicities and are not affiliated with any political or religious organizations. The mission of The Rotary Foundation is to enable Rotarians to advance world understanding, goodwill, and peace. The Rotary International Foundation is a not-for-profit corporation supported solely by voluntary contributions from Rotarians and friends of the Foundation who share its vision of a better world. Rotary International Foundation has changed the fundamental format and purpose of its grant process. The Foundation recognized the need to use its limited resources more effectively. In 2007, the Foundation spent 20 percent of its program budget on long-term activities with high impact, and 80 percent on short-term activities with minimal impact. The new grant model will reverse that: 80 percent of the program budget will support high-impact, sustainable projects. The new grant model will also help meet the priorities and goals of Rotary's strategic plan. The six areas of focus are: 1) Peace and conflict prevention/resolution; 2) Disease prevention and treatment; 3) Water and sanitation; 4) Maternal and child health; 5) Basic education and literacy; and 6) Economic and community development. The Trustees identified these as critical humanitarian issues that Rotarians are already addressing worldwide. Previous Rotarian experience and interest in these areas will promote project success. We need complete transparency
No matter what side of the debate you are on, I suggest you listen to Dr Kevin McKernan. He is a scientist prepared to speak out on his own findings. I have personally seen raw data on the products which supports what he says, hopefully this data will find its way into the public domain after peer review within the next few months. The official PCR test being used to measure DNA contamination in the vials including by the TGA is clearly not fit for purpose. Whether or not these were honest mistakes isn't the issue, it is the evidence of official cover ups that destroys community confidence in public health. To get confidence back they need to admit their mistakes and show transparency. Failing to do this, is just causing more and more harm.

I recently had the honour of writing for the CURAM Magazine on 'Irelands New Dawn - Navigating the Complex Terrain of Immigration and Counteracting Far-Right Extremism' available here - https://lnkd.in/e5jxsE9M Many thanks to the editors for the opportunity to address this important issue. The article is even more poignant with recent events in Newtown Mount Kennedy, alongside the alarming demonstrations by masked individuals outside the homes of Minister Roderic O'Gorman and Minister Helen McEntee, are stark reminders of the challenges facing our democracy. Regardless of how you may feel about government policy, these are Ministers, who serve our country and have families and personal lives just like any of us, and have been targeted in a manner that goes beyond legitimate political dissent. This unsettling trend, fuelled by far-right ideologies, seeks not just to protest but to intimidate and sow division. The escalation of these protests and the threatening rhetoric employed by some claiming to defend Irish values betray a disturbing move towards radicalism. These actions are not isolated incidents but part of a broader, more worrying global resurgence of far-right extremism. The internet, social media platforms, and AI algorithms have unprecedented power to amplify fringe views and create confirmation biases that accelerate radicalization. Such digital environments manipulate public perception, fostering a climate of anger and fear that threatens to undermine reasoned discourse and replace it with reactionary fervor. This is a critical moment for our nation. The principles of democracy, the rule of law, and the integrity of our social fabric are under threat. It is incumbent upon us, the citizens who cherish democratic values, to stand against these divisive forces. We must actively engage in educating ourselves and our communities about the dangers posed by such manipulative tactics and the importance of critical thinking. We need to reclaim our political discourse from those who would manipulate it for nefarious purposes. It is essential that we approach future elections and political engagements with a mindset that values reasoned, informed debate over emotional and reactionary voting. Our response as a community, and as a nation, must be firm and rooted in the principles of democracy and respect for individual rights and freedoms. Let us be the voice of reason and the beacon of critical thinking, for the stakes are high, and the threat to our cohesive society is real and present at our doorstep.

???? September is Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) Awareness Month "The consensus on an SCI forum post was that many people don’t post on social media about SCI awareness. It can be depressing or morbid, it’s not even October and we’re talking about people’s heads detaching from their necks. I enjoyed reading one comment about how people should know about the “bs” we deal with, but I’ll spare you all those details. Some level of awareness is still important, especially with the passing of our most famous spokesperson Superman, his documentary comes out next week! SCI is an acquired disability that is right on the cusp of being a “rare disease” at 305,000 people in the United States and includes 18,000 new cases every year, primarily from vehicle accidents and falls. The awareness I greatly appreciated this year was from watching the documentary Full Circle (2023) [ https://lnkd.in/g2PJrPnU ] on Netflix about Barry Corbet. Barry passed away in 2004, and I didn’t know about Barry and acquired my own injury in 2001 from a sports accident (the fourth most common cause of SCI). What I greatly admire about Barry was his attitude on post injury life, or just life as he might say. He compiled a book called “Options: Spinal Cord Injury and the Future” that is available to everyone for free online. [ https://lnkd.in/ehV2ZgEm ] Options is a collection of peer stories and is in the spirit of independent living. There are profiles of many different people living their best life with a SCI. It’s a look into pre-ADA life with some peer wisdom that still resonates decades later. I feel more aware of Spinal Cord Injury reading through Options because of insights from the average experiences of people, but I also enjoyed Full Circle and will likely go see the Christopher Reeve documentary Super/Man." -Commentary by Alex Thompson, New York Association on Independent Living's Director of Advocacy
