Last week, DESY and European XFEL Users' Meeting 2025 brought together over 1,100 participants from around the globe to share insights, foster collaboration, and discuss the latest advancements in photon science. This vibrant community event showcased the incredible potential of large-scale research facilities to drive innovation across disciplines. As part of these meetings, topics closely aligned with DAPHNE4NFDI’s mission; data management, analysis, and accessibility in photon and neutron science, were prominently featured. The growing interest and active participation highlight the importance of strengthening collaborative efforts in managing the ever-increasing data from state-of-the-art experiments. A huge thank you to DESY and European XFEL for organizing such an inspiring event and for providing an invaluable platform for researchers, engineers, and students to come together and exchange ideas. In a new research article published in PNAS, a team from Argonne National Laboratory and University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign introduced APACE,?an open-source framework that optimizes AlphaFold2 to run at scale on HPC platforms. The researchers used the ALCF’s Polaris supercomputer and National Center for Supercomputing Applications' Delta supercomputer to demonstrate APACE’s ability to accelerate protein structure prediction for four exemplar proteins. They found that APACE performed up to two orders of magnitude faster than off-the-self AlphaFold2 implementations, reducing time-to-solution from days to minutes. Using the Mightex #Polygon, scientists from the University of Tokyo recently published their research?the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences,?exploring how the nematode C. elegans navigate their environment using salt concentrations (klinotaxis). By employing Mightex’s advanced optogenetic tools and PolyScan2 software, the team manipulated neuronal activity to define a putative circuit for klinotaxis. Their findings add support for circuit mechanisms connecting sensory and motor neurons, facilitated by #Mightex technology, advancing our understanding of neuronal integration. ??
