The latest figures show that in 2024, the proportion of disadvantaged students attending university decreased for the first time on record in England. Unfortunately, I found these figures unsurprising in the current climate. The figures from the Department for Education represent a complex picture of societal reaction to past governments' undermining of higher education, the cost-of-living crisis, and the difficulties many graduates face in finding graduate level work. Discussions often focus on policy and resources to widen participation, blaming individual culture, class, and the education system. Although these are important dimensions of the issue, the lack of policy attention and resources to support the transition of under-resourced graduates into the labour market is driving the drop in applicants and perpetuating social inequality. Addressing under-resourced students' barriers can foster greater social equality and empower our young people. As a society, we must advocate for policies that support education and employment opportunities, ensuring that talent is recognised and nurtured regardless of background. As often described by Pacific leaders, addressing the Pacific region's education challenges needs a collective holistic approach. Perhaps the adage "it takes a village to raise a child" is precisely what's needed to address the collective issue of access to (higher) education. In this instance, it would take a village to break down barriers and ensure women are equally accorded the same opportunities to pursue higher education. Read about how The University of the South Pacific has been promoting women's empowerment and equal access to education in the Solomon Islands. Link: https://lnkd.in/gKxYJwvq

As someone passionate about education and equity, I am increasingly concerned about the serious issue facing middle-income students pursuing higher studies in European countries. Despite the loud proclamations of equity, diversity, and inclusion, the reality often falls short of these ideals. European universities, while championing accessibility, frequently have financial barriers that are insurmountable for many middle-income families. Scholarships and financial aid options are either insufficient or inaccessible, leaving these students in a frustrating limbo. The promise of education for all, regardless of socio-economic background, rings hollow when so many talented individuals are excluded from opportunities due to financial constraints. It's time for European institutions to practice what they preach and take concrete steps to support middle-income students. True equity means everyone has a fair chance, not just those at the extremes of the income spectrum. We must hold these institutions accountable and demand that they bridge the gap between rhetoric and reality. Middle-income students deserve better support and a real chance to succeed. #HigherEducation #Equity #Diversity #Inclusion #EducationReform #EuropeanUniversities #StudentSupport #scholarships #masters #phds

?? **Unveiling the Global Challenge: Parental and Peer Pressure in Education Choices** As an education expert in South Africa, I've observed firsthand the pressure students face when choosing academic subjects—a pressure not exclusive to our beautiful nation but a global phenomenon, impacting youths across continents from Asia to North America. The essence of discussions both locally and internationally revolves around parental and societal expectations pushing students towards particular subjects perceived to have better future benefits. While intentions might be rooted in hopes of securing promising careers for the young generation, the repercussions can be harsh. Students often experience stress and anxiety, and their motivation wanes when they're not engaging with subjects that spark their passion. Reflecting on global trends, we see that in Asia, the academic bar is set high for subjects like mathematics and science, creating an incredibly competitive environment. Meanwhile, Europe sees a shift towards vocational education, influencing students to select career-oriented courses early on. Over in North America, the focus is predominantly on college preparation, where students feel compelled to excel in advanced courses to secure college admissions. This international spotlight might prompt us to rethink how we address academic choices in our educational establishments across South Africa. How can we, as part of the educational community, foster a learning environment that champions student curiosity and allows them to explore diverse subjects? It leads to the million-dollar question for my LinkedIn colleagues: **How do we balance societal and parental expectations with the individual passions and interests of our students?** Let's create a dialogue around fostering educational environments that prioritize students' interests over societal pressures. Share your experiences or thoughts—they are invaluable! #EducationReform #StudentWellbeing #AcademicPressure #FutureLeaders #SouthAfricaEducation #SkillsPassport ?? Looking forward to an enlightening conversation! ??
