????The transmission of #poverty across generations is a long-standing concern for national and EU-wide anti-poverty strategies. ?This column uses retrospective data for 30 European countries to compare the strength of the association between growing up in poverty and the risk of current poverty. ??Countries differ in the strength of this relationship: Scandinavian countries have low #intergenerational poverty association, whereas Romania and Bulgaria have the highest. ??It also finds a positive relationship between intergenerational poverty persistence and parental poverty levels, which can exacerbate the reproduction of poverty across generations. Experiencing poverty during childhood can lead to lasting harmful effects in which poverty is passed on to future generations - a cycle that disproportionately affects Native American families. Our publication summarizes a workshop that identified policies and programs that can reduce long-term, intergenerational poverty among Native Americans in the United States. Key historical and structural factors that lead to entrenched poverty were examined as well as promising interventions for addressing them. Importantly, these sessions included a conversation with community leaders on their experiences with and work on intergenerational poverty as well as key data and trends on this topic. Temporary vs persistent #poverty. Why the difference matters - especially for policymakers: 'Poverty persistence and poverty dynamics - Snapshots of who is poor in one period provide an incomplete picture of poverty' by Martin Biewen at Uni Tuebingen. #inequality #IncomeDynamics Elevator pitch A considerable part of the poverty that is measured in a single period is transitory rather than persistent. In most countries, only a portion of people who are currently poor are persistently poor. People who are persistently poor or who cycle into and out of poverty should be the main focus of anti-poverty policies. Understanding the characteristics of the persistently poor, and the circumstances and mechanisms associated with entry into and exit from poverty, can help to inform governments about options to reduce persistent poverty. Differences in poverty persistence across countries can shed additional light on possible sources of poverty persistence Read the entire publication here: https://lnkd.in/dgGVJ2q

Where is the world going? According to the report, the number of extreme poverty is frightening. In addition, according to a press release issued in June, birth rates in OECD countries have more than halved in the last 60 years. China and India have the potential for poverty due to their large populations, and in a world of 8 billion people, the relatively poor countries of Africa are likely to make the largest contribution to the growing population. In the light of this information and under the fact that the basis of the economy is the consumption of scarce resources by human beings, the situation does not look good. Human welfare has to be optimized in some way to the certain point, but it is really hard to predict what the cost will be.
Progress to eradicate #poverty has stalled. Almost 700 million people globally still live in extreme poverty – on less than $2.15 a day. At the current pace, it could take several decades to end extreme poverty. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gnQwWhbD | #3PR
