Happy Farmworker Appreciation Day! ?? Today, and every day, we celebrate the hardworking farmworkers who are the heart of our agricultural community, bringing fresh food to our tables and grocery stores across the world. It's an honor to support our farmworkers and their families by providing access to nutritious food in the rural communities where they live and work. Thank you for being such an integral part of Central California. ??????#FarmWorkerAppreciationDay #feedingcencal

In another dispatch for #hispanicheritagemonth here are some facts around who is growing your food: Nearly 80% of all farm workers in the US identify as Latino, but only 3% actually own their farms. I'm so proud to work for an organization, Connected Chef, that sees this tremendous disparity and aims to do something about it. 80% of the produce we distribute comes from BIPOC-owned and operated farms with the majority of that coming from two NY-based farms: Angel Family Farms and Grandpa Farms.

The fragility in our food systems is a constant pressing matter. At the community level, grass-roots gardening movements are by far the most effective tool in tackling food insecurity. While public spaces for recreation are crucial to public health, establishing a resilient and reliable food system is something that needs to be permanently remedied at all levels. There is enormous opportunity for state and local governments to do more in supporting community food equity through policy and alleviating preventative nutritional gaps.

Important - please share.... For those of you that don't know, bees play an absolutely critical role in our food chain, pollinating many of the plants and vegetables we eat. In many places you can see exhausted bumblebee queens crawling around on the garden terrace or, as in the picture here, crawling around on a sidewalk. It seems that this sight is growing more frequent. The critters can be helped quite easily: Carefully pick them up with a piece of paper. Dissolve half a teaspoon of sugar in a little lukewarm water and spoon it to the animal. Within a few minutes, the bumblebee can recharge its batteries with up to a third of a teaspoon with its long proboscis. If you help a bumblebee queen in early spring, you are not only saving a single animal, but an entire bumblebee colony that is still in the process of being formed. Important - please share....for those of you that don't know, bees play an absolutely critical role in our food chain, pollinating many of the plants and vegetables we eat. The same applies to worker bees as well. ?? NO HONEY, PLEASE!!

Downstream Supply Chain of an exploited industry that I see before my very eyes every morning. Transported in jam-packed crates in an overnight journey. Heads banging on the roof of the cage. Transported alongside unhealthy, partially skinned, diseased, dying and even dead colleagues. Dragged out in the morning and dumped on the ground for sun and sorting - many even kicked around. Exchanging hands at least 2-3 times - manual laborers, bike transporters and others. Tied and hanged upside down for the last mile logistics. Cries of clucking, skin particles, and foul smell permeates the environment. Deposited in dingy shops with sharp instruments, blood and body parts strewn. Caged once again. Watching screaming neighbours get pulled out, slaughtered and torn into pieces before your eyes and knowing that the same fate awaits you sooner or later. I fail to understand what possible taste and nutrition humans get that merits this ultra-horrific treatment of a sentient and a smart animal - Tens of thousands die every morning in every city and town. Billions every year around the world. Hardly anyone blinks an eye. And to know that it was a giant stroke of misfortune that triggered this industry a century ago in the USA - https://lnkd.in/gHeQA2XW. And this happens to just one type of creature - there are hundreds of others who are harvested, force-fed, force-bred, exploited, abused and eventually murdered for human cravings. I understand tons of money and stakeholders are involved but it takes a special and tragic kind of cold-heartedness to do this to fellow beings, especially when plenty of violence-free and healthy alternatives are available. I don't think Karma is real, but if it is, then so many of us should dread the outcome of this monstrosity that we do unto those without a voice. #supplychain #logistics #animalwelfare #vegetarianism #humanity #animalcruelty #mercyforanimals

Cows don’t produce milk because they are cows, they produce milk because they are mothers.? The dairy industry often takes this away from them. Taking their babies within mere days of their birth. We know this is not ALL farms. But it is common practice on most farms. Dairy is not completely harmless.? Dairy cows are often milked to the point of physical pain and exhaustion. Calves are either killed where they are born or sent to slaughter, rarely seeing past a few days old. They are the byproduct of dairy. Their lives are the cost of this industry. Would you reduce your dairy consumption??For them? Cows' milk is meant for calves, not humans. Animals are our friends, not food—they are someone, not something. By choosing plant-based alternatives, you help reduce animal suffering and make a meaningful impact. Join us in making a compassionate change today ?? ... Footage credit: Farm Transparency Project
