Having a mental illness doesn't make you more likely to be violent – yet police arrest, injure and kill people with mental illnesses at substantially higher rates than those without. As we reflect on National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month this July, we're calling for a change: Police should not be the default responders to mental health calls that do not involve a threat of violence. This post from Jade Head brings up a crucial topic that doesn't get discussed enough in the workplace or in our personal lives. I'm curious if your work culture is one where a safety moment like this would be well-received and spur open conversation, or would people joke and sit silently? Would they ask for help? So much more work needs to be done to create psychologically safe workplaces. I'm here if you want to talk more on this topic.

Just a reminder that time change and the holidays increase the risk of substance abuse and suicide. It takes 8 minutes of active listening, 3 minutes of googling resources and 0 opinions to potentially save a life. 7 suicides in 8 months in our small industry is too many. This is a failure on all of our parts. If your crews were affected by the suicides that happened last week, now would be a great time to intervene and host a safety stand down, revolving around mental health resources and substance abuse. We still have 2 months left of 2024. Let's do our part to keep someone else from becoming a statistic.

Mental health challenges affect people across all professions, not just in law. This is a valuable read for anyone curious about this topic. “The Right Not to Remain Silent” is an important book that can change how we see mental health in the legal world and beyond. It includes honest and brave stories from judges, lawyers, and law professors who deal with mental health and addiction issues. Both new and experienced lawyers share their experiences with challenges like depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, OCD, eating disorders, addiction, grief, imposter syndrome, and perfectionism. A recommended book by The Law Society of Manitoba Law(yer) Strong Inc. Fascinating data here on parental pain points and perceptions of danger for their children. What stands out to me is the need to connect the mental health concerns with that of both substance use (self medicating) and violence (aggression + kids *being the bullies). Link: https://lnkd.in/gmihGWXU

Gender-based violence (GBV) has devastating mental health consequences that can last a lifetime. Survivors often endure constant fear, hyper-vigilance, and feelings of unsafety, even in their own homes or communities. Many experience overwhelming sadness, hopelessness, and isolation, compounded by trauma and stigma. Flashbacks, nightmares, and emotional numbness are also common. To build a healthier, more compassionate society, we must prioritize accessible mental health support for survivors, train healthcare professionals to provide trauma-informed care, and advocate for policies that ensure these services are widely available. Together, we can break the cycle and foster healing. #Ndinewe #EndGBV

Good attorneys need to seek out and listen to mental health experts in parental alienation cases. When that happens, corrective progress can be made. When it does not happen, cases can go awry quickly. Attorneys in these cases should always want a mental health expert—if they really want what is best for the child.

The region of the brain responsible for judgment is not fully mature until around the age of 25 or 26, which can lead to "poor decision-making" by youth. Mental illness can affect behavior and judgment in individuals of any age, making it unsurprising that there is a significant overlap between the Juvenile Justice and Mental Health systems. Unfortunately, the juvenile justice system often lacks the proper tools to meet the mental health needs of youth. Limited resources, inadequate training, and a focus on punishment rather than rehabilitation can worsen the challenges faced by young individuals.
