A momentous occasion unfolded at the Georgia Charter School Association Conference as our esteemed CEO, Keedar Whittle, took center stage to illuminate the path forward for education. With the seismic shifts brought by COVID-19, schools are redefining their roles and embracing collaborations like never before. Keedar’s presentation delved into the critical need to harness the potential of partnerships with external entities to advance our educational mission. From community organizations to industry experts, the influx of visitors into our schools presents both challenges and opportunities. Through an engaging workshop, Keedar outlined four pivotal objectives aimed at maximizing the symbiotic relationship between schools and their partners. It’s not merely about adapting; it’s about thriving in this new educational ecosystem. At Educators Now, we remain steadfast in our commitment to empowering schools and educators with the tools and insights needed to navigate these dynamic times. Together, let’s shape the future of education.

YAAAASSSSSSSS! Everything that Jessica Sawko said right here! ?? Speaking at the State Board of Education: https://lnkd.in/e_9SnUiR Link to EdSource Article: https://lnkd.in/e-bkZh_J Many advocacy moments, visits to the state capitol, and letters of support from STEM and Ed organizations Exploratorium, K12 Alliance, CA STEM Network Children Now, CA County Superintendents, Ten Strands, CA NGSS Collaborative and of course, STEM4Real made this happen! Some comments from the field: "If we are testing students in science, it should be counted!" "Without a science indicator on the Dashboard, many districts are at risk of further deprioritizing science instruction." "This is a serious equity issue because it impacts future access to STEM careers and students’ ability to engage in civic activities related to STEM." What do you think? Comment below! https://lnkd.in/eK7ctPCk
Getting a call from John Fensterwald on the issue of science on the Dashboard took me back in time. As I have continued to reflect on the long road of NGSS standards implementation that I had the pleasure of starting in 2010, I took some time to trace some of the key moments in the work to incorporate science into our accountability system. I found this mic drop moment from a March 2016 State Board of Education meeting when Trish Boyd Williams made the case for science better than anyone I have ever witnessed. Trish, it is time to celebrate! This would not be a reality without your tireless support. In case you want to see this moment, here is the link: https://lnkd.in/eJg_JsBP. There were so many amazing people who I had the pleasure of working with over the last 10+ years who got us to this point. As Patricia Rucker was right to often remind us, as soon as you start listing folks, you are going to end up leaving someone out. I am going to try and to it anyway...the amazing folks that helped turn the dream of science on the Dashboard into reality include Trish Boyd Williams Ilene W. Straus Michael W. Kirst Sue Burr Lisa Hegdahl Janet Auer Anita Miller Arron Jiron Samantha Tran Jane Steinkamp Laura Henriques Peter A'Hearn Marian Murphy-Shaw Rick Pomeroy Dean Gilbert Stephen Pruitt Susan Zwiep Dawn OConnor Anthony Quan Efrain Mercado Cindy Kazanis Karen Stapf Walters, Jill Grace, Shawna Metcalf, Stephen Blake, Kirk Brown Virginia Oberholzer Vandergon Jenny Chien Mena Parmar Wendy Hagan, Lori Walsh, Jeff Orlinsky, Joanne Michael Kathy DiRanna Maria Chiara Simani Shay Fairchild Nathan Inouye Linda Tolladay Nathan Fairchild, Leena Bakshi McLean, Ed.D Jenna Porter Will Parish Karen Cowe Gerald Lieberman, Ph.D. and many, many more!

So, so excited to announce that I will be presenting a full-day pre-conference workshop at the Association for the Assessment of Learning in Higher Education (AALHE) Annual Conference this June with the extraordinary Divya Bheda, PhD: Many Paths to Justice: Actionable Strategies for Transforming Assessment Practices through an Anti-Racist Lens?(All audiences) Equity gaps persist throughout higher education. We want to be agents of change, but lack practical strategies for dismantling racialized barriers. In this highly-interactive workshop, we examine Okun’s framework of White Supremacy Culture, which positions White Supremacy not as individual bias, but as a network of cultural beliefs, attitudes, and structures, both covert and overt, that uphold the false notion that whiteness itself is valuable. We will explicate its components and foster reflective discussions of how they have shaped assessment. Participants will co-construct actionable strategies to disrupt White Supremacy Culture in higher education. The goal is not to shame or blame, but to foster a brave space in which to transform assessment toward social justice. This is far and away my favorite conference to attend, so please join us! Public K-12 is often considered a public good. Why not higher education? Thx to Yolanda Watson Spiva and CCA for continuing the discussion. How do we frame our conversations around this ‘public good?’ Living and working a state focused on economic and workforce development, I see a pretty clear linkage between the value of post sec as a public good and the continued identification and development of more opps for all South Carolinians. Instead of why … ask why not?
"To restore public trust in higher education — which can increase participation in our democracy and improve civic culture — we must reframe higher education as a public good." - CCA President Yolanda Watson Spiva, Ph.D., BCC. Dr. Watson Spiva has been in Indianapolis today, presenting and meeting with higher education and policy leaders from across the country as part of the Civic Learning and Democracy Engagement Coalition, of which CCA is a lead partner. #CCADoesTheWork

At Willow Beach, we are dedicated to addressing the residual educational challenges intensified by the COVID-19 pandemic. The pandemic significantly widened existing achievement gaps, particularly affecting students in high-poverty districts. We found this article from The Decision Lab to be quite insightful. It discusses the long-term impacts of the pandemic on education and the critical role of interventions in bridging learning gaps. https://lnkd.in/eq4CM5R3
