As a first-generation student, I find it deeply disappointing to see this groundbreaking decision framed as reducing the 'quality' of students. This attitude reinforces the damaging notion that students who come from less privileged backgrounds—those whose family did not have the chance to attend prestigious universities—are somehow lesser, or of 'lower quality.' That’s simply not true. This mindset is precisely what makes students feel unwelcome in academic circles. It suggests that academic merit is tied to social or financial background, rather than ability and hard work. When professors openly express these views, it’s no wonder that many talented students from disadvantaged backgrounds decide not to pursue selective degrees. It's not because they can't succeed, but because they're made to feel like they don’t belong in the first place. The reality is, academia should be a meritocracy, but attitudes like this undermine that ideal. If we're serious about fostering inclusion and opportunity, we need to stop tolerating this kind of thinking. All students deserve a fair chance to succeed—regardless of whether their parents went to college. #Academia #InclusiveEducation #Meritocracy #EqualOpportunity #EducationForAll

Bad news for my University. This will reduce the quality of education and research on campus for all students. Financial aid will be less generous going forward. Fundraising plays an essential role at the private universities and this new law will be very costly for Stanford and USC. Admissions depends on multiple factors including applicant "quality".

This is huge, and could potentially send shock waves through the admissions policies of elite institutions across the United States. The real question is what pressures now on the Governors and state legislatures of East Coast states to act (in particular, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York, Rhode Island, New Jersey, and Connecticut) where all of the Ivy League schools are based, and where "legacies" can account for more than 13-14% of intake at Stanford and USC. Institutions like Harvard, Yale, and Princeton have long given preference to children of trustees and major donors to the institutions. Lots of questions for us to consider as this plays through higher education. What unintentional consequences might we foresee in the otherwise noble drive for a level playing field?

Breaking: Gov. Newsom signed legislation to ban legacy admissions in the state of California. The ban, which would affect private colleges and universities from considering a student's connections to the school, takes effect with the Class of 2026. While the University of California system and the California State University system does not consider connections, Stanford, USC, and others will be affected. Jeffrey Kennedy and Simon Pek's overview of deliberation and deliberative mini-publics as means to shift higher education away from adversarial debate and towards more thoughtful, collaborative discourse and decision-making is worth reading and thinking about for educational development, workplace learning and community consultation. https://lnkd.in/gx2xtyXu
“Debate, like protest, can play a crucial role in public discourse. But amid division and decreasing confidence in higher education, universities need more deliberation, not more debate.” Jeffrey Kennedy of McGill University – Faculty of Law and Simon Pek of Peter B. Gustavson School of Business, University of Victoria, think “deliberation has enormous potential to address issues productively, enrich students’ education, and rejuvenate universities’ democratic roles.” Read more about how deliberation can support dialogue on campuses and within the wider public in the latest issue of SSIR: https://lnkd.in/e2Xh98RD

https://lnkd.in/ezWFUAff Virginia public universities are no longer allowed to use legacy as a factor in admissions. Although Virginia Institute of Technology had already banned legacy admissions, the University of Virginia and the College of William & Mary are going to have to adjust their policies to no longer use legacy in their process. #collegeadmissions #collegeplanning #legacyadmissions

Illinois has become the fourth state to ban legacy preferences at public colleges and universities in the state. However, none of Illinois' public institutions currently practice legacy admissions, so the move is largely symbolic. #GreatCollegeAdvice #CollegeAdmissions #LegacyAdmissions
