The most recent Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) compared to 10-year trends shows that the mental health of high schoolers has generally been declining over the last decade, and mostly unchanged in the last 2. Yesterday, I had the privilege of presenting virtually to some of the Career Technical Education (CTE) teachers in the South Sanpete District in Utah to discuss CTE's role as a protective factor for mental health. We connected the regular components of CTE like work-based learning, tangible progress through hands-on learning, multi-year teacher and peer connections, goal-setting, and opportunities for mentoring to the documented increase in hope and engagement that these activities have. CTE isn't just preparing learners for the workforce, it is helping to bolster their mental health, buffer the negative effects of trauma, and prepare them for life.

As an ex school psychologist, and as a parent of a previous school refuser (thank you Indie School for helping my boy turn things around https://indieschool.edu.au). I am a great believer in schools taking an informed and emotionally intelligent approach to this big problem! #anxiety #schoolrefusal #teachingopportunity #teaching #psychology #compassion #connectionbeforecorrection
Research indicates that school refusal can have a significant impact on a young person's learning, development and health – including into adulthood. Research also shows that early intervention is effective, and can help affected students rebuild a sense of school belonging. We've teamed up with young people, families, research leaders and clinical experts to produce two new resources to help address the rising issue of school refusal. "The start of the school year can be a particularly daunting time as students encounter significant changes such as new teachers, classmates and schools," says Prof. Rosemary Purcell, Orygen's Chief of Research Translation. "With that change comes an increased chance of anxiety that can lead to school refusal." Access the free toolkit: ?? For school staff: bit.ly/3SAE7ZG ?? Acknowledging the significant impact of cyberbullying on mental health and overall well-being is vital for educators, parents, and community members alike. Tackling this issue requires proactive approaches such as educating on digital citizenship, fostering empathy, and advocating for respect in both virtual and real-world settings. It is imperative for our students to acquire the skills to navigate the digital realm safely, actively participating in and nurturing inclusive and supportive online communities.
