René van Paassen is the winner of the 2024 AIAA de Florez Award for Flight Simulation ? Congratulations! The award was presented at the AIAA SciTech Forum in Orlando, Florida and is a recognition of an outstanding individual achievement in the application of flight simulation to aerospace training, research, and development. According to the AIAA, Van Paassen deserves the award for his key contributions to the fields of human-in-the-loop vehicle simulation, real-time and distributed simulation software, and aerospace human factors. “He is a visible credit to the university.” René van Paassen: “I am deeply honoured by this award, and think it is good to stress the importance of (flight) simulation. We ask pilots and other professionals to operate complex vehicles and machines, and expect them to quickly react to any anomalies. Human Factors theory tells us that can only work when professionals can pick up patterns from the multitude of signals available. We owe it to them to increase our understanding of training and performance and convert that into appropriate training environments to hone their skills.” #aetudelft?#tudelft?#aerospaceengineering?#AIAASciTech?#AIAA?#sustainableaviation?#clearskyrevolution

IONLAB@ISAE-SUPAERO will attend the 2024 European Guidance, Navigation, and Control Conference in Bristol! Rajashree Srikanth and Inês Afonso will demonstrate our recent advances in real-time wing shape estimation avionics for very light (and thus flexible) aircraft. Our endgame is to design flexible aircraft (such as Carlos Cesnik’s X-HALE at the University of Michigan) with simultaneous rigid and flexible state feedback through coupled control laws design. Our research question: how far can we expand the aircraft design envelope by doing so?! How light can aircraft get?! We are very enthusiastic and can’t wait to share our findings!

?? Only a few hours left... ...before the winning team of the 8th DLR Design Challenge of the German Aerospace Center (DLR) is announced! At the closing event in Hamburg today, the six participating teams will present their concepts to the judges. The participating teams were tasked with designing an economical and climate-friendly short-haul aircraft for use in a regional route network from the year 2050. They had the freedom to choose the passenger capacity and range of their concept to most efficiently serve a given route network. After the judges have evaluated the technical reports, the teams must now present and defend their results in this final step. Afterwards, the jury will meet one last time to determine the final winner. Aviation faces enormous economic and ecological challenges. Therefore, revolutionary new ideas and approaches are required to shape the aviation technology of the future. Since 2017, students have competed annually in the #DLR Design Challenge with their forward-looking aircraft designs. ???? Bend It Like Beckham! Following a brief pause, we resumed the experimental aeroelastic activities at Cranfield using the 8x6m wind-tunnel facility. This year we (the royal 'we'), mostly our MSc student, Cédric Espérabé-Vignau (in the thumbnail of this video), jointly supervised by my colleague Anderson Proen?a, redesigned, manufactured, tested and analysed the benchmark Cranfield University’s Beam Reduction and Dynamic Scaling (BeaRDS) - eXperimental BeaRDS, XB-3 wing. The acceleration of the wing was measured at four different nodes along the wingspan for velocity sweep from 0 to 40 m/s and root angle of attack sweep from -10 to 14 deg. In the video you can see a video clip for velocity sweep at root angle of attack at 12 deg. From the early analysis (the spectrogram at the end of this video, Sensor 4 is at the tip) the first 3 bending modes are identified at 2.44, 10.25 and 24.9 Hz. The next step will be to identify the bending modes using Cranfield's fast simulations framework, the Cranfield Aircraft Accelerated Loads Model. In the up coming test campaign the test envelope will be extended to observe flutter and limit cycle oscillations (LCOs). The tunnel data can be made available upon request based on mutual research interest. #experimental #aeroelasticity #windtunnel #cranfield #research #academia

Great updates from Cirium Ascend Consultancy this morning at the Aircraft Economics conference in Miami Beach! One update in particular had a big impact on attendees - the GTF engine issue. With approximately 500 aircraft already parked and that number expected to grow to 600+ by the summer, the question on everyone's mind is: what is Pratt & Whitney doing to repair over 1,200 engines? Stay tuned for more updates on this story. #AircraftEconomics #GTFengineissue #PrattandWhitney

In honor of this year's #WCX, which officially kicks off tomorrow, check out one of the most downloaded papers from last year's event below: "Simulating Traffic-Wake Effects in a Wind Tunnel" by Brian McAuliffe and Hali Barber (National Research Council Canada / Conseil national de recherches Canada) from the SAE International Journal of Advances and Current Practices in Mobility. Platooning is a strategy that improves ground vehicle performance through increased aerodynamics. This paper investigates these benefits by introducing the Road Traffic and Turbulence System (RT2S) to replicate traffic wakes in wind tunnel testing. Experiments show significant aerodynamic improvements via drag reduction. These findings suggest potential fuel savings and emissions reductions, especially for both light-duty and heavy-duty vehicles. Read and download the full paper below, and be sure to let us know if you will be at #WCX2024 from April 16-18 in Detroit, Michigan! #automotiveengineering #futureofmobility #aerodynamics
