Year after year, our annual nursing survey reminds us that more and more nurses are struggling with their mental health. Whether it’s caused by burnout, financial hardship, family struggles, or increased stress in the workplace, nurses are in need of relief, resources, and impactful change in the workplace. We recently partnered with Don’t Clock Out to discuss what changes are the highest priority and how we can help nurses in the meantime. “You need a safe and supported workplace environment; no amount of therapy is going to replace that” In all honesty, “just look for a new job” is a drastic oversimplification that fails to recognize the emotional and mental labor that a typical job search requires. We empathize with everyone trying to tough it out, but we also offer ourselves as a resource along with several other great organizations recommended by Don't Clock Out. ?? Dear nurse, how are you coping at work? ?? Last year I provided an intimate grief session to nurses in my city it was so beautiful. My sister in love and one of my best friends are both nurses. So reading an article about nurses being confronted by violence was heartbreaking...I could see them. I could see you dear nurse. My reading prompting the following thoughts. ??The challenges nurses face in the workplace, particularly with rising incidents of violence, demand a unique set of skills to not just cope but thrive. Here are a few tips from an emotional intelligence perspective: Stay Calm Under Pressure: In the face of verbal or physical threats, maintaining composure is key. Emotional intelligence enables nurses to navigate stressful situations with resilience, ensuring effective patient care and personal well-being. Empathetic Communication: Understanding and empathizing with patients, colleagues, and even those who exhibit aggression can foster a positive environment. By acknowledging emotions and communicating effectively, nurses can de-escalate tense situations. Advocate for Change: Emotional intelligence empowers nurses to be advocates for their own safety. Support initiatives like the Workplace Violence Prevention for Health Care and Social Service Workers Act, urging organizations to take necessary steps to reduce risks. Seek and Offer Support: Emotional intelligence involves recognizing when you need assistance and being open to offering help. Create a supportive network among colleagues to share experiences and coping mechanisms. Continuous Learning: Stay informed about legislative efforts, such as the Safety from Violence for Healthcare Employees Act, and actively participate in training programs. A commitment to ongoing education enhances your ability to adapt to changing work environments. Let's foster a culture where emotional intelligence not only helps nurses cope but empowers them to thrive in their crucial roles. Together, we can create safer and more supportive healthcare workplaces. ?? #NursingStrong #EmotionalIntelligence #HealthcareAdvocacy #triumph If you like my content don't forget to follow me and be sure to check out my new book available this month. https://lnkd.in/gvd45cwT
