As we celebrate our 15th anniversary by revisiting some of our favorite resources, we're turning next to a crucial one: Re-Thinking How We Work with Boards on Evaluation and Learning. Mariah Brothe Gantz reconsiders this important piece and explores what it would look like to apply a racial equity lens.

We are starting to develop our programme of events at The Northern Taste of Clean - an open event for those interested in how Clean Language can be employed to help us live, work and learn together. Welcome to........ How to de-radicalise your parents Caitlin, Julian and Katie are developing an approach to uncovering our own radicalisation processes through helping parents de-radicalise themselves. Clean approaches help us put our own biases to one side while you approach your client, or parent, with fresh eyes and ears. Using Systemic Modelling tools such as evidence/inference, Drama and problems/outcomes can help us uncover wider, systemic biases that we’re buying into and then helping us unpack our own and others’ radicalised positions Radical: To be extreme or fanatical in one’s beliefs and opinions [in ways that don’t get us more of what we want, or cause conflict & drama, and deplete safety, belonging or freedom]? This is a draft workshop, looking at how we are putting this approach together and uses: the story of how Katie became radicalised in relation to trans vs women’s rights and how she’s freeing her mind.? https://lnkd.in/eqeheayD

I'm excited and you'll never guess why. In 2020 when I implemented my plan to switch to full-time consulting I didn't know anything about protecting my intellectual property...and four years later, I still don't know much. What I do know is how to find people resources. What I have learned is to make my wishes known...because "a closed mouth don't get fed". I was invited to a webinar hosted by a number of attorneys where I heard Rukayatu ("Ruky") T. speak about IPs. Around that time I had adapted my racial equity course for MPA students into a racial equity curriculum for a larger audience. And, I had beta-tested and implemented my racial equity curriculum and workbook with leadership teams. Rukayatu inspired me to protect my IP, so I connected with her and our journey together began. Less than four years later, I received this email from Rukayatu...what a journey!!! Working with Firm for the Culture was the right choice for me. Although the work was virtual and the processes were automated, which was a new concept for me, I received personalized service from the FFTC team. Each step was explained in layman terms, each letter from the government was made clear, each timeline was met by Rukayatu, and they exceeded my expectations. I felt like it was more than a business transaction, I felt like I was a part of a supportive community assisting me in meeting my goals. I even received a love offering when dealing with the aftermath of my mom's stroke. Thanks, Rukayatu!! When you are a Creative, and especially when you don't consider yourself a Creative, but you create things, you must consider owning your creations. No one else should take credit for or earn an income from your hard work. I highly recommend working with Rukayatu ("Ruky") T. and Firm for the Culture for your trademark needs. You will be well taken care of!!

Have you ever been on the receiving end of a well-intentioned attempt at help that was just…not super helpful? Or worse yet, totally unhelpful? Or maybe you’ve felt pressure from your organization to give help to others, so you try your best, but what you offer just doesn’t really hit the mark (and you know it). In this new Academy of Management Discoveries piece with Colin Fisher and Teresa Amabile we explore the phenomenon of “unhelpful help” in creative organizations. We discovered through our research in a global design firm that cultures with strong norms of helping and flexible roles - often considered facilitators of creative work - may have the unintentional consequence of breeding unhelpful help. As Teresa notes below, it’s written in a more informal tone than the typical academic article, which was a blast to write and we hope makes it accessible to a range of readers. Feel free to comment or DM for a copy if you can’t access it! https://lnkd.in/eTcg_e-4 NYU Stern School of Business
Read what my amazing colleagues Colin Fisher and Julianna Pillemer and I discovered about help at work that isn't all that helpful! In press as of yesterday, in the Academy of Management Discoveries "Discoveries in Prose." https://lnkd.in/epy3EGnM It's called "When the Thought Doesn't Count: The Dynamics of Unhelpful Help in Creative Organizations." Writing this piece in the style of The Atlantic or The New Yorker was quite a challenge - but also great fun! Harvard Business School #helping #creativity

?? Uncreative Thinking and Behaviour are Learned ?? Have you ever wondered why some people seem brimming with creative ideas while others struggle to think outside the box? The answer might surprise you—uncreative thinking and behavior are often learned. ?? Conditioned from a Young Age Children are naturally curious, imaginative, and inventive. They explore the world with wonder, unafraid to experiment and make mistakes. However, as they grow, societal norms, standardized education systems, and sometimes even well-meaning guidance can curb this innate creativity. The emphasis on conformity, following rules, and achieving specific results often suppresses the creative instincts. ?? Education Systems Our traditional education systems prioritize rote learning and standardized testing. Students are frequently rewarded for finding the "right" answers rather than exploring multiple possibilities. This environment can stifle creativity, teaching young minds that there is only one correct way to think and solve problems. ???????? Parental and Social Influence Parents and society often unintentionally discourage creative behavior. The pressure to fit in, achieve high grades, and pursue conventional career paths can lead children to suppress their creative impulses. Statements like "color within the lines" or "focus on what's practical" send subtle messages that creativity is less valuable than conformity. ?? Workplace Culture In the workplace, risk-averse cultures can further cement uncreative thinking. Employees may feel discouraged from proposing innovative ideas if they fear failure or backlash. This mindset can inhibit a company’s growth and adaptability in an ever-changing market. ?? Reigniting Creativity The good news is that creativity can be rekindled! Encouraging curiosity, celebrating diverse perspectives, and creating safe spaces for experimentation are key. Educational institutions, workplaces, and parents can all play a role in fostering a culture that values and nurtures creativity. At Mirai Minds, we believe in the power of creative thinking. Our workshops are designed to reignite that spark of curiosity and innovation in both children and educators. Let’s work together to unlearn uncreative behavior and embrace a more imaginative future. ?? Starting a small team of problem solving innovators. Two campus students, myself and a colleague from Mount Mary are going to be using the design thinking process to solve all kinds of campus issues from scholarships and food choices to marketing and the water bottle crisis. I look forward to seeing the innovations we come up with. After we get this going we will be working g with other local nonprofits and companies looking to solve problems in their workforce and companies. So if you have issues you can’t seem to solve and want to work with an innovative group of young thinkers, give me a shout. #DesignThinking
