Wise use of #evidence and #data by philanthropic organisations can enhance community trust and build greater donations, write CEI Director Dr Jean Liu 卢传瑾 and Managing Director Mary Abdo today in an opinion-editorial in The Straits Times:?https://lnkd.in/dD9RU9q8 “[Better] data offers a path forward in an increasingly complex philanthropic landscape. It can help funders and individuals to know where to direct their money, and can help track how the money has changed the lives of beneficiaries. This, in turn, could encourage further donations,” the article notes. The authors cite the worldwide trend toward greater focus on evidence in #philanthropy. In Singapore, they note initiatives like the National Council of Social Service (NCSS) launching a Centre for Evidence this year, as well as the CHILD (Centre for Holistic Initiatives for Learning and Development) centre, and efforts by AWWA Ltd & Asia Philanthropy Circle. And they advocate for the open sharing of #research and #evaluation findings, in the effort to develop a local evidence-base to guide philanthropy in Asia going forward. What gives people a reason to give? ???? Our National Giving Study 2023 surveyed 1,951 respondents and 112 focus group participants to find out just that: how much, how often, and in what ways people in Singapore give, as well as what drives and holds back their giving behaviour.? ?? Those who were more likely to donate and volunteer are those:? ?? ? who donated or volunteered as children; ?????????? ? are interested in social issues; ????? ? who participate actively in religious life; ????????? ? and who trust charities and those outside their own social circles.??? ?? We also found that some younger Singaporeans have taken to new, alternative ways of giving which require smaller time and financial commitments.? ?? People give for different reasons, some because it’s the right thing to do, others because of their egos and yet others because they want to make a real difference in someone life. The social dynamics of giving and managing of the giving process is no easy feat. In our latest blog we detail some of the important challenges faced by anyone who might want to establish an individual giving campaign in Africa.
