I was recently in a meeting at Tougaloo College when the NAACP shared that a handful of the nation's most well-endowed universities raise more money per day than nearly every HBCU in America raises annually, per capita. Keep that in mind when considering the following stats shared in the article below: 1) 13% of America's population is Black; only 6% of physicians are Black 2) HBCUs produce 70% of the nation's Black physicians. The notion that "HBCU's produce an outsized impact" in the United States must become more than a convenient talking point in speeches. Props to Bloomberg Philanthropies and all the people behind the scenes who we'll never know that fought for and shaped this historic investment. The recent $175 million donation from Bloomberg Philanthropies to Meharry Medical College is truly momentous! As a former student, I have complex feelings about this news. While this investment in the future of Black healthcare professionals is significant, it also brings to mind my challenging experiences at Meharry. These experiences have inspired me to write a book that explores critical issues at a Historically Black College and University (HBCU) medical school. My upcoming work delves into the uncomfortable truths surrounding health equity, institutional power dynamics, and the often-silenced voices of those who challenge the status quo. It examines the personal and professional costs of advocating for change within established systems, with a particular focus on Black mental health, entrepreneurship, and the broader struggle for Black liberation. I firmly believe that true progress demands more than financial investment; it requires a steadfast commitment to confronting and addressing deep-rooted systemic issues. My forthcoming book aims to contribute to this critical dialogue, aspiring to catalyze substantial reforms in medical education by advocating for enhanced transparency, strengthened accountability measures, and the establishment of a robust mental health infrastructure.

From a workforce development standpoint, we are seeing across regions the need and demand for healthcare professional. The pandemic was hard on all of us but I think we often forget the long standing impact to our frontline healthcare professionals. In addition in 2022, only 5.7% of medical professionals identified as Black or African-American. However, 70% of Black doctors in the US are HBCU graduates. HBCU medical schools help create a diverse and highly skilled healthcare workforce and conduct vital research that benefits society. Investment into healthcare, healthcare professional, and our HBCU medical schools are more important than ever. Well done Bloomberg Philanthropies

I hope the awards come with a stipulation, or at least an encouragement, to have those endowments also managed by predominantly Black OCIOs (outsourced chief investment offices) and managers. Moving large sums of money right back into the hands of the usual suspects feels counter productive otherwise.
