The Scientific Recommendation by Scientific Advice Mechanism on how to strengthen the #OneHealth approach in the EU was published recently. ??The One Health approach recognises the inherent connection between human, animal and plant health and the health of our #environment and the impact that this has on a wide range of policy areas. ? The key recommendations emphasize enhanced collaboration across #policy areas, greater integration of preventive actions, and improved surveillance and risk assessments. ?? Given the current challenges to both our health and the planet—ranging from antimicrobial resistance and avian influenza to climate change and pollution—it is evident that the One Health approach is more critical than ever. ?? The report includes insights from Tuomas Aivelo, Lisa Boden, Stephanie de la Rocque, Paulo Ferrinho, Tyra Grove Krause, Andrei Jean-Vasile, Saana Jukola, Marion Koopmans, Saskia Stucki, Antonia Trichopoulou, Jakob Zinsstag, Ilkay Edo?an Orhan, Lucy Robertson, Serge Morand, Tomislav Mestrovic, Fabian Leendertz and Dominika Latusek-Jurczak. Since WittKieffer recently launched a practice in Animal & One Health, this story from UN Environment Programme (UNEP) caught my attention. It provides a great explanation of One Health: human health is inextricably linked to the health of animals, both wild and domestic, and the health of the planet. The article highlights how a healthy environment is fundamental to preventing diseases and ensuring overall health. It underscores the importance of clean air, water, and soil, which are essential for sustaining life and preventing health issues such as respiratory diseases, waterborne illnesses, and malnutrition. Importantly, the article discusses the impact of environmental degradation on vulnerable populations, who often bear the brunt of pollution and climate change. It calls for urgent action to protect and restore natural ecosystems, advocating for policies that promote sustainable development and reduce environmental risks. By prioritizing environmental health, we can create a healthier, more equitable world for all. Want to learn more about our leadership solutions for Animal & One Health organizations? Global health: The more it changes, the more it stays the same As bird flu spreads in cows, fractured U.S. response has echoes of early covid (The New York Times, 24 April 2024). https://lnkd.in/gvrATiUe I have described the dismal state of global health in a LinkedIn post in October 2015, published in the literature in August 2022 and entitled: "Global health: What Stands Behind the Name, a Global Mess" - https://lnkd.in/gwjiESc - https://lnkd.in/gTm6v9Vg I have also?called for drastic change in global health for years and often end my posts with: Drastic change is needed in global health, and it starts with leadership, vision, and framing. I look at it the way it should have been, the way it ought to be, and the way it can be and say why and why not. I think outside the box because I am out of the box. Instead of obsessing over artificial intelligence, mankind should address its natural stupidity.
