I really appreciate this! Accepting that you are the right person at the right time is not arrogance, it is success. During my time as NAEA Elementary Division Researcher Commissioner, I worked to help K-12 art educators, especially those in my division, see research and data in the art classroom so they can better use those tools to help students, advocate for their programs, and communicate with administrators/policy-makers. I took the help of several mentors, but to do this, I had to first “own it” as part of my own identity…I am a researcher. I am an artist. I am an educator. I am a leader. I often have to repeat these statements to myself when I experience imposter syndrome or encounter bias-inducted micro aggressions from colleagues. I am an educator, not just an art teacher. I am an expert research translator and numerical storyteller, which is more than “pretty good” for elementary. Policy didn’t give me a seat at the table…hard work, excellent communication skills, passion, extensive content knowledge, and strategic growth mindset did that. You have a lot to offer. Nobody knows everything and you know a great deal more than nothing. Gratuitously accept success as it comes, savor it, and then share it.
