Whose holiday is it? The National Basketball Association (NBA)’s or the National Football League (NFL)’s? Basketball got to Christmas first, football last. But it’s more complex than that. My piece for Sports Business Journal:

The Entire NBA Is Betting On One Team to Go Up in Flames The Phoenix Suns have sent away years’ worth of first-round picks to build a championship contender. The only problem is that they’re not winning. In fact, nearly a quarter of the NBA is shorting the Suns. Owner Mat Ishbia, who took over the franchise in 2023, swung a deal for Durant, giving up four first-round picks in the process. It was a calculated wager: If Phoenix were winning, the selections they’d be giving up wouldn’t be all that valuable anyway. In their haste to build a championship contender under owner Mat Ishbia, who took over the franchise in 2023, the Suns have traded away their own draft picks at an unprecedented rate. In the process of assembling a roster that features All-Stars Devin Booker and Bradley Beal alongside future Hall-of-Famer Kevin Durant, Phoenix has parted ways with its top selections in the next seven drafts. Along the way, the Suns have also assembled an aging team that is now struggling just to qualify for the postseason. You don’t need to dive all that deep into NBA history to see how such short-term schemes tend to pan out. Like today’s Suns, the 2013 Brooklyn Nets also wanted to make a splash. They had a new owner in Mikhail Prokhorov, a Russian oligarch who signed off on a trade that shipped away three first-round draft picks—and a swap—for aging stars Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce. In short order, the Nets fell apart. As for those picks they sent away? They turned into Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum, who last season took the Celtics just where the Nets had dreamed of going: the NBA championship.

The phrase ‘Monday Night Football’ may be no stranger to heavyweight clashes but an all-time NFL great taking on Deadpool has to be a first. This is Tom Brady tackling Ryan Reynolds, League One’s big spenders going head-to-head with Hollywood FC — or simply, Birmingham City versus Wrexham. On one side, we have Birmingham City, recently taken over by U.S. investment firm Knighthead, with NFL legend Tom Brady as a minority owner. Despite their shock relegation, Birmingham is looking to make an immediate impact with their £20 million summer spend. They're building not just a squad but a brand, with ambitious plans like constructing a new stadium. On the other, Wrexham has been riding high on the celebrity wave of co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney. The "Welcome to Wrexham" documentary turned this once provincial club into a global phenomenon, driving unprecedented fan engagement and sponsorship deals. The stakes are more than just points on the board; it's a battle for hearts, minds, and wallets across the Atlantic. With 36 million U.S.-based soccer fans still undecided on their allegiance, both clubs have a golden opportunity. CBS Sports’ four-year deal with the EFL ensures this showdown will be broadcast live, exposing both teams to a massive American audience. To get ready, check Tom Brady's post on X via this link ?? https://lnkd.in/eciwGuJu The outcome on the pitch is unpredictable, but one thing is certain: this "celebrity derby" is more than a match—it’s like a defining moment in the race to capture the U.S. fandom. ????? Btw, there's another club in town for the 36 million U.S.-based soccer fans, Westchester SC. Mitchell Baruchowitz and Danny Dekker are working hard to push this forward. From 2025, we will be competing in the USL League One with Westchester. If you want to be a part of it from the start, please get in touch. The queue is long, but we still have a little space… #BirminghamCity #Wrexham #WestchesterSC #sportsbusiness

What a season for the Washington Commanders! The social + content department is truly capitalizing on the on-field performance in a special way. Some more combined year-over-year social metrics across Facebook, X, Instagram and YouTube: ? 171% increase in social value (1st in NFL) ? 220% increase in engagements (1st in NFL) ? 100% increase in impressions (1st in NFL) ? 149% increase in video views (2nd in NFL)
Whether it was on-field wins, player excitement or creative content, this season was big for several National Football League (NFL) teams on social media. Today’s question: I have so many brilliant business minds on my LinkedIn. Many of you are well connected inside the sports world as well. So, would love to hear thoughts on this… The NFL is most definitely “King” in the sports landscape. There is no doubt about that.. But, there has been a great deal of talk about the “struggling NBA product” and recently the “weak ratings” of the Winter Classic. Add MLB to the mix, and how can things be fixed for the better for those theee professional sports? (NBA, NHL, MLB). All thoughts appreciated.

If your fantasy lineup or parlay blew up because of Saquon's slide, maybe it's time for you to check out Fantasy Sports EVO. With EVO you pick teams instead of players to build your lineup. #DFS #sportsbetting
?? The slide heard round the betting world! It was louder than the doink that gave the Commander's the win. Saquon's decision to slide after securing the first down and effectively sealing the game for the Eagles is a decision that has many sports bettors angry. Those bettors and fantasy players had hoped Barkley would take that open field and score the touchdown. Why? According to David Purdum of ESPN more bets were placed on Barkley to score a TD than any other player in Sunday's NFL Wild Card games. QB Jalen Hurts had scored the Eagles two touchdowns earlier in the game leaving those bettors hoping for Barkley to hit the open field. With Fantasy Sports EVO, it doesn't matter who makes the play. You pick teams instead of players. If you don't want to rely on one player making or breaking your lineup, choose Fantasy Sports EVO. #DFS #Sportsbetting #NFL #Dailyfantasysports

You hate to see another March Madness come to an end, but in comes the NBA playoffs with their 5th year of play-in games beginning tonight This innovation was a reaction to a pandemic that caused the league to adapt and try to soften loses, in the NBA’s case a 10% revenue lose and a 37% viewership lose in 2020 The short version of the format is that seeds 7-10 in each conference compete to determine the final two playoff spots in their conference 7 vs 8 and the winner secures their spot, the loser has a chance to face the winner of 9 vs 10 for last spot (loser of 9 vs 10 eliminated) Regardless of criticism, the league rebounded from pandemic era business struggles and kept this innovation around Just two and half years later, they hit the $10b revenue mark for the first time The goal of the move from a business standpoint was obviously more playoff games = more viewership = more money, but it also hoped to replicate the depth of teams and underdog possibilities that March Madness has They also hoped to incentivize teams with extra playoff spots giving the middle of the pack teams a chance which, in theory, limits tanking Tuesday-Friday marks the start and it has some massive stars It also includes the Miami Heat team who just last year, as a team who lost their first play-in game, advanced to the finals It was hard for me to type that, but it had to be said. But the Celtics are back Nonetheless, LeBron James, Steph Curry, Jimmy Butler, and Joel Embiid are some of the stars starting the 2024 NBA playoffs and I have a feeling these guys definitely won’t hurt the success that the play-in games have brought for business Excited to see how the next couple of weeks play out and as always, Go Celtics #sports #sportsbiz #linkedinsports

Is the SuperBowl the Groundhog Day of investing? The old football wives tale is that if a team from the old National League wins, the S&P 500 will rise, and if the American League team wins, it will fall. And it claims an almost 80% success rate. You won't catch me making decisions based on athletic prognostication. I favor a data-driven approach to everything I do, including investing. Give me data every day of the week, and twice on SuperBowl Sunday. #investing #moneymatters #superbowl (tag Nevin Adams) https://lnkd.in/gBKxZZCS
